The AFC South looms to be the worst division in the NFL this season which provides the Colts with the perfect chance to return to the playoffs.

Strength

The Colts’ offence last season was absolutely carried by their run game on the back of second-year pro Jonathon Taylor. They finished top five in the NFL for rushing attempts, yards, touchdowns, and yards per attempt.

Their offensive line is built with fantastic run blockers and with Nyheim Hines being an above average second option, I expect this running game to be elite once again.

Weakness

Defensively, on paper, this team is very good. But when you go back and look at what they did last season, they allowed 32 passing touchdowns, the second-most in the entire NFL.

They have Kenny Moore who is one of the better slot cornerbacks in the league, but their boundary guys weren’t great. They bought in former defensive player of the year Stephon Gilmore over the off-season who can make a huge impact, if he can stay healthy.

Player to watch

The wide receiver position has never been so stacked, so naturally some elite talent will go under the radar. One of those who I am shining a light on is Michael Pittman Jr.

Pittman doubled his yard total from year 1 (503) to year 2 (1082) in an offence that ranked 26th in the NFL for total passing yards. With his 6’4 frame and former MVP Matt Ryan coming in to throw him the football, Pittman could explode!

Who’s under pressure?

Since demanding a trade out of Jacksonville at the end of 2019, Yannick Ngakoue is on his fourth different team in the last four seasons. He had a bounce back season with the Raiders in 2021-22 but still couldn’t cement his position.

With young edge rushers around him, Ngakoue needs to have a big season to ensure that Indianapolis can be a place to stay.

Projection

I don’t expect the AFC South to be a good division at all and I am confident this Colts team is good enough to win the division and make the playoffs. Matt Ryan offers an upgrade over Carson Wentz last season, how significant that upgrade will be is yet to be seen.

They have young stars offensively, a solid offensive line and play makers on all three levels of the defence. This should be a good team, but an AFC wildcard game will be a battle!

Win/loss: 10-7
