The Jets have had one of the most entertaining off-seasons for reasons that have nothing to do with football, so I think it’s time we actually concentrated on that!
Strength
I think the Jets improved on their strength during the off-season which should hold them in a better way coming into this season.
Their strength last season was their run game, and despite being down in most games, therefore having the least number of attempts, they ranked 13th for rushing yards per attempt.
With the addition of Breece Hall via the draft, they look to have a nice duo with him and Michael Carter to support Zach Wilson.
Weakness
The Jets’ defence was an absolute disaster last season, ranking last in the league in the following categories: points conceded, yards conceded, first downs conceded, rushing touchdowns conceded, percentage of drives ending in a score, and points conceded per drive.
With head coach Robert Salah known for his defence while co-ordinating in San Francisco, I expect this defence to take a step up this season.
Player to watch
Jermaine Johnson was widely touted as one of the best edge prospects in the 2022 NFL draft and predicted to go as early as 4. He slid all the way to pick 26 and will have a chip on his shoulder this season.
Considering the Jets lacked any sort of pass rush last season, I fully expect Johnson to come in and make an immediate impact this season.
Who’s under pressure?
Mekhi Becton was the Jets’ 11th overall pick in 2020 and was dominant at times as a rookie. However, in year 2, injuries and weight problems left him as essentially a non-factor.
He has been very outspoken about the criticism he has taken on but if he can’t play this season it is justified. At his best, he can be a 10-year tackle in the NFL, but he is on the PUP list again coming into training camp, so it isn’t great signs.
Projection
I think the Jets were one of the big winners of the NFL draft, taking three awesome talents in the first round at positions of need and getting the top running back in the second round.
Zach Wilson, despite being disappointing overall, finished the season with some strong performances and if he doesn’t let his off-season antics distract him, can take a second-year leap.
I feel more optimistic that this team will be the better New York football team!
