Hi further in fact Usman averaged 25.13 under Michael Clarke and 36.05 under Tim Paine according to ESPN cricinfo. He has not averaged less than 40 under any captain for strike rate
Cummins is proving a successful captain - but how is the job affecting his own stats and those of his teammates?
Hi thanks. What is conflating the numbers for other captains is that players like Head and Labuschagne had huge averages for the 4 tests they have played under Smith’s captaincy. Also the mistake re Pat Cummins is in the table- apologies The text however is correct. “ As captain Pat Cummins has a bowling average of 25.89 compared to 21.59 when not captain”.
Cummins is proving a successful captain - but how is the job affecting his own stats and those of his teammates?
Thanks good points. The article was to draw some parallels and as I have mentioned not causality. For whatever reason including ageing, team selection, and possibly captaincy etc there has been a decline in the performance of key players. Also on the inspiration a number of players in the England set up including Crawley and Leach do say that the Stokes captaincy has directly enhanced their outlook and performance, granted these are not Australian examples. Cheers
Cummins is proving a successful captain - but how is the job affecting his own stats and those of his teammates?
Thanks for your comments Jammel appreciate it. Yes I agree none of the three are truly great. I also think that Pat Cummins may be a tad unlucky with a lot of players dropping their averages under his captaincy.

Richmond appear to have drafted well this time around
My bold predictions for the 2022 AFL ladder
Thanks- could be right but they seem to promise a lot and not deliver.
My bold predictions for the 2022 AFL ladder
Hi Graeme. Thanks. Selecting the team was harder than I thought it would be especially the opening slots. Green was great in many ways- I just feel at number 6 more reliability is needed with the bat.
Combined Ashes team of the series: Who makes the cut?
Thanks Sheek, that is a great “second” 11 !
The greatest West Indies Test side of the last 50 years
Thanks Paul- yes I agree that having a few who can score 400 plus is key. Parkinson would be a gamble in Australia.
If England make it Down Under, this is a squad that could win the Ashes
Hi ChrisH thanks. Yes Smith was the clear winner. Six premierships will do that !
Who are the AFL's greatest ever coaches?
Thanks Kick to Kick fair point to segment the time period
Who are the AFL's greatest ever coaches?
Thanks Goalsonly- that weighting would work well
Who are the AFL's greatest ever coaches?
Thanks kick to kick, fair point. I think there are two things- identifying overall proportion of coaches inside and outside; and then within that the relative successes- I have gone for the latter for manageability of the exercise but see the connection
Do clubs' favourite sons ever make good coaches?
Many thanks yes the points you make are true
Do clubs' favourite sons ever make good coaches?
Targa, Hi. quite right- arithmetic error !
The best New Zealand Test cricket side of the last 50 years
Good points Kick to kick. Picking a benchmark is problematic. Maybe a historical average of all the coaches?
How are coaches performing at the midway mark of the season?
Thanks James good point about looking at the last two to three years. I guess I was thinking that the whole period for coaches would smooth out the fluctuations.
How are coaches performing at the midway mark of the season?
Thanks Peter- yes Witts is interesting as you say. Before his injury he was going very well at the Suns including the captaincy
How have Collingwood traded over the past decade?
Thanks Peter, yes very frustrating to watch the same thing over and over, especially either chipping it around and/or then just bombing to an aimless contest. The few times that they look any good are when Moore delivers to Howe through the middle, in which case I am unsure why Magden is the outlet player (admittedly he was on the wing and played a reasonably good game).
Where is the dare, Collingwood?
Hi again The Bush. Sorry to labour the point and you mount some good arguments but under Smith Head has averaged 77 compared to 44.4 under Cummins and 39.75 under Paine. However one measures means and things Head has received an enormous bump under Smith. I was thinking of removing Smith captaincy from the numbers since he has only captained Head in 4 tests but felt that it was not appropriate to do so.
Cheers
