Atkins into the centre was the catalyst in the second half. He took the first three possessions in the third quarter which helped negate Hawthorns drive out of the centre. Duncans 31 possessions and Kolo back helped although Dekoning and Henry are still out and now Bews.
Cam Guthrie has been terribly out of form. After being benched at half time he came back into the midfield but still looked underdone. His kicking and handball was at times wayward and far from as sharp as he can be, but at least Danger is starting to click again. I think Z Guthrie and Bews (out at half time) were the only premiership players left on the backline who have played in all four games. From a Cats supporter’s perspective the signs were positive.
I’m surprised Sicily got away with that very late “tackle” on Cameron.

Footy Fix: Premiers back on track, or is one of the greatest quarters in AFL history just a dead Cat bounce?

“Not one of the great teams of the 21st century” Must be a leading contender for the most fatuous remark of the 21st century.

Have the Cats finally run out of lives?

Meanwhile in the real world, the reasons are obvious and I understand why Daisy is not welcomed. Her gender is irrelelevant.

Daisy Pearce changeroom controversy highlights AFL’s lingering sexism

Good synopsis of the games. The Collingwood boganaty were out in force as usual. Not exactly known for the number of brain surgeons in their ranks although I suspect a lot more familiar with lobotomies. I remember telling Peter the scribe when the pies drafted Ollie Henry they would be just minding him for two years. He was and is a Geelong boy through and through. He was always going to end up at Geelong.
Considering injuries to Stewart and De Koning in the game in what was already a depleted back half and a fairly poor mid field effort, the Cats did not do too badly. I currently cant see much future for Parfitt at the club.

AFL Round 1 Power Rankings: Hot Pies, Carlton cold, Crows cooked, Port hits the spot

B2B is hard to do. No team has managed to do it in normal seasons. Hawthorn in the draft compromised years and Richmond in Covid. Then again I have always believed a little luck is neccessary to win any GF.

AFL season preview: Melbourne and Geelong are proven heavyweights, while Brisbane only wish they were

No, but the majority of AfL suporters and players do.

AFL would you rather: Non-Victorian (and Geelong) preseason edition

As i have said before Holmes is not only going to be good he will be very good. Geelong chased him for a reason. I will back wells and co.

Who can break into your club's Best and Fairest top 10? Part 2

Not sure how you worked that out but you must take those purple glasses off occasionally Don. From my memory Geelong won the first quarter Freo caught them in the second and went into half time level. Freo had a good third quarter and Geelong won the last quarter. Freo were only ahead at the end of one quarter. At best it was 2 quarters each and that was while Scotty was still experimenting with the game plan. As they say it’s not always who you play but when you play them.
I can tell you I have never hung my hat on a Geelong win under 3 goals let alone 3 points and no one plays more away games than Geelong.

'Flagmantle' at last? Here's why 2023 will be the year of the Docker

I think too much is often credited to the coach. I guess the theory is he takes the axes he should get the orchids. I personally think the assistants play a much bigger role. Look at both Dimma and Scott. There were significent changes below them before premiership success. Then there is the rest of the football dept from the CEO down. Brian Cook is a good example, now at Carlton but successful at wet toast and Geelong. Geelong now have Hocking and Mathew Loyd. Richmond have Neil Balm.

How long is too long for a coach's tenure?

I dont know what the figures are and I personally have only anecdotal evidence from a surprising number of my friends that no longer attend or watch much more than the highlights at best. There are two reasons that I’ve been given by friends. The rule changes: Many dont like the rule changes especially the stand on mark rule. Many of the rules adjusted to give more protection to the player are also unpopular. Lastly the woke politics that have crept into the AFL like most everything else which feels like there is a round for just about every minority on the planet has also been a turn off, especially for people who do not like sport and politics missing. I certainly limit my watching of the woke rounds.
Also In my case I am limited to watching due to location. The high cost for international expat watchers such as myself, which you would think would be reasonably priced to attract a more international audience is a turn off, as I have mentioned before. $299 for twelve months (which effectively is a 6 months season) works out to $50 per month. International Expats not only watch AFL but help promote it to others unfamiliar with AFL. Still short sighted greed by the AFL first. Promotion of the game internationally second.

How can the AFL arrest plummeting attendances?

Whatabout whatabout whatabout. Well whatabout cotchin in previous incidents. Hawkins like most top forwards gets sniped at behind the play all the time. As far as Hawkins being protected, remind me how many players have been suspended for jumper punching.
I understand why tiger fans hate Geelong. It’s common for football fans to hate the team they most fear. Cant wait for Cats v Tigers. We’ll get a chance to rest all of our good players.

Cotchin, De Goey escape with fines for controversial pre-season incidents, Preuss tackle thrown out

Yawn. More hubris from another over optimistic tiger fan that thinks Richmond will worry the Cats. Worry about making the finals first. Scott is well known to put the overall plan in front of early season wins. The objective is to have the players fit and focused in August/ September a win in april means little although I think it will be round 9 before the Cats play the Tigers.

Daicos tag the first of many, Port's ruck conundrum and more: Talking points from AAMI Community Series Day 1

A bit shaky hanging your hat on a 3 point win almost a year ago Don. The Swans beat the Cats by 32 points and we know how well that went for them.

'Flagmantle' at last? Here's why 2023 will be the year of the Docker

I would argue the AFL would be better served with a team in Bangkok. Its only 8 hours from Brisbane. The accommodation is cheaper and the food is a lot better.
I know, but it’s no more an outlandish proposition than London.

The AFL needs a London Football Club

Round six should see where Richmond are in the scheme of things after they have played Melbourne. By then they will have played some of the better teams. I dont think anyone should be picking favourites just yet. Generally most teams improve. The question is how much more have they improved than the teams above them.

The dynasty is far from over: count Richmond out at your peril

The big danger for the blues is injury. Vosses uncompromising style of hard at the ball even through pre seaaon could take its toll on players as the season wears on. Time will tell.

Will Carlton really play finals in 2023?

Best of all time. Gary ablett snr gary ablett junior patrick dangerfield joel selwood poly farmer steve johnson jimi bartel paul couch alistair lord tom hawkins.

The captaincy trap Cats won't fall into with new duo following in Selwood's huge footsteps

Great until he broke his leg. He was never the same. It took a long time to come right

The captaincy trap Cats won't fall into with new duo following in Selwood's huge footsteps

Don I’m sure they understand it but it doesnt mean they like it. Imagine a kid born and bred in freo supports freo with his whole extended family. His football is nurtured by freo and when he makes the draft he is selected by GWS or GCS. One could understand his disapointment and his hopes to play for freo. On another tack how is Jordan Clark going? He looks to me to be going ok but not performing up to the potential I thought he had when drafted by the Cats but admitedly i have only seen a few freo games. Its not easy being a pussy in Bangkok.

Or how a team goes from the butt of jokes about old men to a team with a cunning plan of using experienced players in one premiership.

The value of experience in building a finals-contending team

No. It is well known that nsw has been a cesspit of sin and debauchery since the early days of the rum corps whilst victoria was formed to provide the rest of the country with a compass for moral behaviour. 😊

'I've let 44 of my best mates down': Ginnivan hit with two-game ban over illicit drug use

Its the whatabout syndrome. Deflecting from the subject at hand. However you slice the cake 2 weeks is a slap on the wrist for bringing the game into disrepute. Ginvan should have been given 6 weeks minmum. The low bar needs to be reset. There are many past examples.

But he didnt. Could say the same about Hawkins at times. Woulda coulda shoulda doesnt win a premiership.

The Roar's AFL top 50 players, 10-1: Who takes top spot?

Fair attempt guys. Buddy making it? Once a top ten but now nowhere near the top 50. Forgetting my pussies (and no love for Guthrie) who I may be a little prejudiced towards, I would have rated Oliver no 1 over Petracca. As for not rating the brownlow medalist. The best player hardly ever wins a Brownlow especially if he is not a midfielder. The other Best player awards are often better at picking the B&F and the umpires shouldnt be doing it but that is a story for another time.
