Mike, with Vernon Philander (161 wickets at 22.4) & Kagiso Rabada (71 wickets at 23.7), along with developing spinner Kesha Maharaj I think their bowling is in pretty good shape.

While Australia fight for funds, England eye Ashes

They will play ‘home’ matches in UAE & northern India.

Afghanistan, Ireland made full ICC members

I agree Spruce. I don’t see why players salaries or contracts need to be made public. I cannot see what benefits would flow from it. In fact, I think it would create greater problems within the game with regard to media coverage.

The AFL and its players have failed to meet the challenge of change in the new CBA

As a sufferer of mental illness and having made an attempt on my life, I was horrified by Robinson’s comments. I spend a lot of time presenting mental health and suicide prevention talks around WA and we are slowly getting the message through.

Well written.

Mark Robinson's insensitive depression tweet shows tide is turning

They have certainly improved Adrian. Bangladesh drew its last series, in Sri Lanka, 1-all.

Late last year, Bangladesh drew its home series against England 1-all. The Test it lost was by just 22 runs.

Given Australia’s recent record in Asia, this will be a challenging series.

Australia's Bangladesh trip crucial for both nations

My reason for stepping away is not related to anything other than my ongoing medical issues. I have been a long term sufferer of mental health issues, which have been publicly highlighted over many years. Currently, I am not traveling all that well, and as a result, some of my work has been particularly shoddy. Continuing to write for The Roar is no longer beneficial for me where I am presently, and it is disrespectful to the reader. Hence, I have decided to step away.

Freo hits rock bottom as Lyon faces a monumental task to restore the faith

I am sorry but I do not have the power to edit the story after it has been published and to do so after the event would be disingenuous and would merely be covering up and would also make the comments already made appear ridiculous as the story would have been rewritten.

I trust you can understand that.

I was wrong and I have apologised. My efforts here lately have been sloppy, hence this will be my last column for The Roar.

I am not saying they are looking at him as a saviour at all, as I noted in the column.

However, I would say, selecting a player who you feel is probably not ready for the AFL does highlight the issues that Lyon has with his current squad.

The fact that after just two weeks and having named the same 22 both weeks – one I take it he believed to be the best club had – to go down such a radical path with six new players being brought in (one of which he himself says is probably not ready), shows that the club has major issues.

Freo hits rock bottom as Lyon faces a monumental task to restore the faith

The extent of the issues facing Ross Lyon are perhaps best expressed in this comment made after Sunday’s loss to Port:

“”Is Griffin Logue ready? Probably not.”

Four days later he has been chosen to play Western Bulldogs this weekend, one of six inclusions.

Freo hits rock bottom as Lyon faces a monumental task to restore the faith

SHM, Lyon was never going to be sacked with what happened last season having taken out the minor premiership in 2015. Comparing one poor season by Lyon against a man whose entire coaching career lasted just 33 games is not a realistic comparison. Lyon had massive credits in the bank given 2013 & 2015, something Neeld never did.

It has been proven by Clarkson & Hawthorn that the Neesham game plan was effective with the right personnel. It would have been fascinating to see how he would have gone with a high skill team.

Apologies Steve, you are quite correct. I read the wrong column on AFL Tables … CL rather than CG.

Fair call Linphoma in hindsight.

The stats that matter for the Australians in India

Bullpit, given Warner averages 59 at home I cannot see him being left out for the Ashes series.

He averaged 53.8 in the six Tests against RSA & PAK in the summer just gone. He will definitely be opening at the Gabba in the first Test against ENG.

I think you may be mistaken Doogs. I do not recall writing a column on Smith and Kohli’s behaviour distracting from the cricket.

Qwetzen, it is actually an interesting point you raise about Ashwin’s carrom ball. It used to be a significant weapon for him, but you are right, he used it very little. I wonder if he was carrying some sort of niggle after a long summer.

The stats that matter for the Australians in India

As I said, a tough call Nudge.

Ashwin: 21 wkts at 27.4, ER 2.6
Lyon: 19 wkts at 25.3, ER 2.9

That is a fascinating question Peter. Hard to select sometimes when players do not all play every match. But, here goes …

Rahul
Renshaw
Smith
Pujara
Rahane … not a lot of competition
Maxwell
Saha
Starc … batting very handy
Jadeja
Umesh

Which leaves Ashwin v Lyon for off-spinners role. They were both similar with the ball, which is a big compliment for Lyon. Whilst he did very little with bat, I would go with Ashwin as he is a genuine all-rounder.

The stats that matter for the Australians in India

I think Cummins does have more control than Starc, who is very much in the Mitch Johnson mould, and when on song, can be unplayable. But he can also bleed runs at times. Starc, I think, is far bette when used in short, sharp bursts.

If you go through the scorecards on Cricinfo you will be able to find out Stu. Certainly did help in IND with AUS winning 3/4.

I disagree PP VII, the team as a whole performed better than its last tour in 2013 when it was swept 4-0. To be right in the series after two days of the final Test is a huge improvement on last time, considering the current IND side has lost one of its past 23 Tests.

After the humiliation of a 3-0 result seven months ago in SRL, I think this current result showed a collective improvement.

Plus, an opener who at 20yo, had very little first-class experience.

As for still coming second, yes they did. But I would rather have watched this series than the last which was horribly one-sided.

The Perth Test situation remains an interesting one with CA still saying it believes the new Perth Stadium, with its drop in pitch, could be the venue for the Ashes Test.

“Dropped catches galore and missed stumping by the dozen” ….. you must been watching a diffeeent series to me Bob.

I take it you are not a fan of Wade’s but I think your assessment of his performance is way out of whack with what actually happened.

The stats that matter for the Australians in India

Head has shown at ODI level that he has the temperament for the bigger stage.

He has had a modest summer at first-class level. He would need to put some consistent numbers, especially with the bat, to really be considered. At present, Maxwell has shown more than enough to show that he deserves the number six spot.

The stats that matter for the Australians in India

I get the feeling Albo we are likely to see something special from Cummins this summer. At times he looked a handful against IND. I am very much looking forward to seeing what he produces at the Gabba against ENG and beyond.
