That’s a very cliche response, and is the generic response to any umpire criticism. It’s interesting that you yourself as a journalist would very much be an ‘armchair critic’ when it comes to discussing the players and coaches – they do something wrong and all aspects of the media come extremely hard for them, call for them to be dropped, sacked etc.
How come umpires on the other hand are such a protected species? Just like players and coaches, this is their job – if the standard isn’t good enough (which it quite clearly isn’t currently), I don’t see any difference to commenting on a player being out of form, or a coaches job being under pressure.

Six Points: Channel 7's commentary, the AFL's most underrated coach, and what on earth is wrong with a draw?

It’s one of my absolute pet hates! Show us the live play always – only go to a replay when they can.

What rugby Union has at least is an effective TMO for the most part. Its Referees are also well respected across the world. The fact that there is one main ref makes it easier for consistency.
AFL umpiring has gotten worse going from 3-4 main field umpires.

I disagree,
I watch a lot of different sports – cricket, EPL, rugby. The umpires/refs in all of those sports are far more competent than AFL umpires – of course complaints are natural, but the sheer number of blatant mistakes AFL umpires make per week is higher than any other sport imo – I genuinely think they either have an issue with lack of training, lack of consistency or a pure lack of talent?
Maybe they aren’t paid enough? Whatever it is it’s a major issue.

I do think that’s a little simplistic- this isn’t just the odd umpiring mistake here or there. It’s a genuine fact that umpiring standards across the board are so poor and we see absolutely shocking decisions every week – the Freo one vs Carlton and the Adelaide one vs Essendon are two examples this year already of shocking decisions directly impacting results – but how many absolute garbage decisions do they make per week that don’t necessarily impact the result?
I don’t think the AFL should be as accepting of the umpires being so consistently incompetent – no other sports umpires make as many mistakes as the AFL.

My only concern about Fox having their own commentary is does that mean we will hear more Kelli Underwood or Dwayne Russell?
They are the two worst commentators in the league – even worse than anything Seven put out.
The best two play by play callers are Matt Hill and Adam Papalia.
Don’t even get me started on some of the special comments – David King is unbearable.

No.

Sounds like they’ve over compensated for it being so dry.
Surface was ruined after Coldplay and it’s never come back well.
Sometimes I miss Subi oval…

The thing Fox do way better than 7 is their camera work. I can turn commentators I don’t like off (whenever I hear Dwayne Russell or Kelli Underwood the mute button comes out…) but Seven regularly misses the action – it’s just a far inferior visual product.

Not sure I have too much sympathy for Carlton fans complaining about umpiring… but I think your comment probably goes to the bigger issue that the umpiring standard across the board in this league is downright awful.

Freo don’t have good small forwards – that’s actually in my opinion their biggest issue.
Walters is near the end.

Footy Fix: Ross Lyon is the AFL's most boring coach once again - and it's suffocating the Saints' season

He’s boring sure, but Longmuir is even worse.

Longmuir is Ross Lyon lite – he plays the same way but without any of the personality.

Don, I literally watched the replay today (was a horror watch), and for the first 3 quarters Freo moved the ball at a snails pace out of the backline. Some credit goes to WCE but there was an obvious decision for negative ball movement when we were behind.
Now, either Longmuir is telling them to do this, or the players are ignoring him – either way it’s an extremely poor look on the coach.

Six Points: Greene lucky to only get a week, 2024's two best wins, and the moment that sums up woeful Roos

Yeo’s performance was clearly more instrumental to the result than Fyfe’s, hence his awarding of best on ground. I’ll agree Fyfe was our best, but our midfield had their colours badly lowered.

When its not against Freo, sure…..

Macca, the best thing for the Blues right now is to keep going under the radar with the media – just bank wins. The minute the hype train gets too loud is when it might derail..

Editors at the West Australian get a stiffy every time he gets the ball!

Coaching is absolutely part of it – the go slow cautious ball movement is beyond frustrating, it’s draining as a fan to watch them chip it round the back whilst the opposition sets up in position.
The lack of dare from the back half is astounding considering Jordan Clark and Hayden Young could be absolute weapons off half back if they were given a licence to actually attack by the coach.

That requires the coach to show a shred of creativity and tactical nous. J-Lo’s gameplan seems to consist of defend, slow ball movement, and when in trouble slow it down even more…..

That’s ok when the midfield is on top – but when it’s getting soundly beaten like it did for the 2nd and 3rd quarters on Saturday, having our most damaging player nowhere near the ball is an issue – either inject him into the ruck and move Darcy forward, or put Jackson on the ball for a 10-15 minute period and see if he can create something. He’s a freak, but needs to be involved.

That ‘weak’ team are ahead of us on the ladder…
All of the players I mentioned shouldn’t be on AFL lists. Our bottom 6 is as bad as anyones in the competition.

No issue with Darcy back in the ruck – but what does Jackson do? Given he’s our most damaging player, I’m not sure hiding him in the forward line is the answer, when the forward line isn’t getting any of the ball – play him on the ball perhaps.

Then for goodness sake get them in! What is the point in a WAFL player like Banfield consistently playing over them?
Even if they aren’t quite ready, we may as well get them involved. I saw Simpson kick two goals for Peel – he at least knows where the sticks are unlike Banfield.

Yeah, I’m not sure what the answer is? Jackson is a gun in the middle, but Darcy is the better ruckman.
Play Jackson as an on baller?
