Paul Haselby was an All Australian and a rising star winner!
Been in a very good paddock post retirement though!

Bought Kayo with the sole purpose of never having to see Roaming Brian again..

Macca, it just isn’t… that’s such a garbage argument. Geelongs home ground is Kardinia Park and they really should be playing all of their home games down there period.

Apologies – got you confused with Tim the author…
I fundamentally agree with a lot of what you have said – but I can name you a time umpiring was better – every year prior to the decision to move from 3 umpires to 4, it’s been an unmitigated disaster bringing in the 4th field umpire which has only made the job tougher and more confusing, whilst exposing more less experienced and less talented umpires to AFL ranks.

I’ve umpired hockey to a reasonable standard so understand the challenges that umpires face – but one of the biggest challenges is having another umpire alongside you, that has different opinions, ideas and views on the rules. It’s hard enough with 2 of you on a hockey field, 4 is impossible. Less voices is better.

The start to the solution is quite simple – go back to 3 umpires, pay them more and train them more.

Australia’s two most in form batsman are Head and JFM. They must be picked.

Australia's brightest rising T20 star JMK may have to wait his turn for World Cup selection, despite already setting IPL alight

Stoinis has made his one score for the year – the likliehood of him doing anything at the World Cup is so minimal.

Not picking JFM would just sum up the boring conservatism that we see with CA these days – they pick the safe option instead of the exciting option – Wade is 36 years old, it’s laughable to pick him over JFM.
Picking 2 wicketkeepers in a 15 man squad is dumb, if one gets injured you can bring another one in as a replacement player anyway. Pick Inglis as your keeper (like he was in the ODI World Cup) then put JFM in the squad – he’s too good to not have in.

I think that’s exactly what it is. You see the likes of Kane Cornes and David King out there being cheerleaders and then they go too far the other way to avoid coming across the other way.

Howie is a significantly better cricket commentator than he is an AFL one.

Honestly, the absolute best person invovled in AFL media at the moment is Will Schofield – he’s just really honest, sees the game well, has the right balance between seriousness and banter, and isn’t at all biased towards or against West Coast, which is rare for analysts who are former players. Pav goes the other way sometimes and is too hard on Freo, whereas someone like Cornes is far too biased towards Port.
Hope Schoey gets even more games not just when it’s the two WA teams.

Kelli is fine as an analyst or a host – she’s just objectively a very poor play by play commentator and makes a lot of mistakes.
Howie is ok, but prefer him with cricket. Taylor and JB are far too matey and like to make it more about themselves than the action.

4 umpires is worse than 3 – there’s just another umpire to confuse decisions even more. The standard has gotten worse since the extra umpire was added.

Six Points: Channel 7's commentary, the AFL's most underrated coach, and what on earth is wrong with a draw?

Clearly that’s where I’m going with this – I’m pretty sure AFL umpiring isn’t a full-time job? Which is mad, pay them more, invest in more training, put more money in to actually improve the standard of umpiring, rather than just turning them into this protected species that can’t ever be questioned.

Six Points: Channel 7's commentary, the AFL's most underrated coach, and what on earth is wrong with a draw?

That’s a very cliche response, and is the generic response to any umpire criticism. It’s interesting that you yourself as a journalist would very much be an ‘armchair critic’ when it comes to discussing the players and coaches – they do something wrong and all aspects of the media come extremely hard for them, call for them to be dropped, sacked etc.
How come umpires on the other hand are such a protected species? Just like players and coaches, this is their job – if the standard isn’t good enough (which it quite clearly isn’t currently), I don’t see any difference to commenting on a player being out of form, or a coaches job being under pressure.

It’s one of my absolute pet hates! Show us the live play always – only go to a replay when they can.

What rugby Union has at least is an effective TMO for the most part. Its Referees are also well respected across the world. The fact that there is one main ref makes it easier for consistency.
AFL umpiring has gotten worse going from 3-4 main field umpires.

Six Points: Channel 7's commentary, the AFL's most underrated coach, and what on earth is wrong with a draw?

I disagree,
I watch a lot of different sports – cricket, EPL, rugby. The umpires/refs in all of those sports are far more competent than AFL umpires – of course complaints are natural, but the sheer number of blatant mistakes AFL umpires make per week is higher than any other sport imo – I genuinely think they either have an issue with lack of training, lack of consistency or a pure lack of talent?
Maybe they aren’t paid enough? Whatever it is it’s a major issue.

Six Points: Channel 7's commentary, the AFL's most underrated coach, and what on earth is wrong with a draw?

I do think that’s a little simplistic- this isn’t just the odd umpiring mistake here or there. It’s a genuine fact that umpiring standards across the board are so poor and we see absolutely shocking decisions every week – the Freo one vs Carlton and the Adelaide one vs Essendon are two examples this year already of shocking decisions directly impacting results – but how many absolute garbage decisions do they make per week that don’t necessarily impact the result?
I don’t think the AFL should be as accepting of the umpires being so consistently incompetent – no other sports umpires make as many mistakes as the AFL.

My only concern about Fox having their own commentary is does that mean we will hear more Kelli Underwood or Dwayne Russell?
They are the two worst commentators in the league – even worse than anything Seven put out.
The best two play by play callers are Matt Hill and Adam Papalia.
Don’t even get me started on some of the special comments – David King is unbearable.

No.

Sounds like they’ve over compensated for it being so dry.
Surface was ruined after Coldplay and it’s never come back well.
Sometimes I miss Subi oval…

The thing Fox do way better than 7 is their camera work. I can turn commentators I don’t like off (whenever I hear Dwayne Russell or Kelli Underwood the mute button comes out…) but Seven regularly misses the action – it’s just a far inferior visual product.

Not sure I have too much sympathy for Carlton fans complaining about umpiring… but I think your comment probably goes to the bigger issue that the umpiring standard across the board in this league is downright awful.

Freo don’t have good small forwards – that’s actually in my opinion their biggest issue.
Walters is near the end.

Footy Fix: Ross Lyon is the AFL's most boring coach once again - and it's suffocating the Saints' season

He’s boring sure, but Longmuir is even worse.
