Love it or hate it, the AFL is top dog of Australian sport

people have been blaming packer and Murdochs moods for the AFL getting overs for the last three deals….

Love it or hate it, the AFL is top dog of Australian sport

Its coming slowly to Rugby league as well – 5 states have been rebranded under the NRL and even touch got the NRL prefix. Grassroots is coming under the “PlayNRL” banner. Why? because they’ve seen that the AFL’s branding strategy works.

where has the AFL admitted its losing millions on this

Out of shape bloke who can't kick straight has surprisingly strong opinions about AFLW

Carlton Blues vs GWS Giants: AFL Women's live scores, blog

I never said anything about last nights games or this weeks games. Anyone with half a brain knew they wouldnt be as high this week.

Women's sport weekly wrap: AFLW has set the standard for other sports

I doubt it would have made much of a difference.

The Crowd at Princes Park incidentally was higher than Carltons previous two games during the preason at the same venue – which are also free to get in for AFL and club members.

Women's sport weekly wrap: AFLW has set the standard for other sports

The difference is that the AFL is commited to providing a best pathway for the AFL Womens comp and doesnt have to worry about spending money on internationals and the elite players that make up the national squad at the expense of its domestic players who are being paid 3/10ths of nothing.

And professional sport is very much driven by those who want to watch and pay to watch. Which is part of why we have the gap we do.

Women's sport weekly wrap: AFLW has set the standard for other sports

If by promote you mean set up the teams, provide facilities, and staff – and promote it. Then sure.

Women's sport weekly wrap: AFLW has set the standard for other sports

It comes down to two questions – how competent is the administration of those sports and were those sports popular at the professional level to begin with? The AFL comes off a large support base here, and has a huge media unit to generate its own media as well as the regular news media. Its not just sitting around waiting for the media to cover it.

AFLW delivers on the big stage

Sunday 26k Saturday 34k. Well down from 55,000 and 108,000 in 2016.

If the ARU gets its plans right, rugby sevens will explode

there was a fair few women on social media who agreed with the “historic for sport” sentiment – in particular the “see they WILL watch” movement,

What's so historic about the AFLW?

how about we call it a lockout then. Because its precisely what it was – Vic Pol actively refused to let more into the ground – the AFL was apparently trying to convince them to let people come in an sit along the boundary line, but they said no.

What's so historic about the AFLW?

for the womens comp…most of the cost is being covered by womens comp sponsors.

And you’ve missed the point, just like most people did about GWS and Gold Coast. Its about a long term plan that is just as focuissed on game developmemnt as it is financial reward.

We need more seats! Four talking points from AFL Women's Round 1

It may not have invented womens sport – and nowhere has anyone in AFL land claimed it did – but judging from some comments made by some Mathildas on social media – some of whom were locked out of Princes Park on Friday night – its going to be a big driver for the recognition of womens sport in this country.

What's so historic about the AFLW?

its not the AFLs job to promote other sports just because they cant do it themselves.

What's so historic about the AFLW?

lol on what basis can that statement possibly be made. TV ratings last night were 600k nationally on 7 and more than 180k on Fox. Whitten Oval was practically sold out at 10,100 and Thebarton oval pulled 9,200 in the rain.

It doesnt matter if the games are free either, the AFL doesnt need the gate reciepts, you still have to get people through the gate.

AFL Women's opener watched by TV audience of 896,000

Maybe, but thats not unexpected too. Its the same principle that guides the install ment of GWS and Gold Coast. Womens footy isnt about immediate gratification, its all about the future.

AFL Women's opener watched by TV audience of 896,000

it doesnt matter how many rock up in the end. Yes its a great start – and it might dwindle off a bit, but the Womens league isnt as much about today as it is about the future. Like GWS and Gold Coast, this investment by the league isnt about immediate results.

AFLW reignites community feel

The ratings were better than any WBBL innings this year, way better than any Wleague match, and better than the NRL test between Australia and newzealand women that rated 198,000. As far as womens sport goes, this was MORE than satisfactory.

AFL Women's opener watched by TV audience of 896,000

268k for Dogs v Freo on FTA, probably another 50k in Adelaide foir Adelaide v GWS (it had a peak of 114,000)

To compare – highest rating WBBL game of the summer pulled 223k, and averaged 164k over the season,.

AFL Women's opener watched by TV audience of 896,000

more than 9,000 turned up to Thebarton Oval to watch Adelaide v Fremantle yesterday in wet weather. More than 70,000 watched on Fox, and around 50,000 watched on Adelaide FTA.
