Twelve months ago, Monza saw some unforgettable magic from Daniel Ricciardo, who took McLaren to their first Formula One since 2012. While their situation is starkly opposite in the present, there is still a prospect of another great Italian Grand Prix to come. Be sure to tune in on The Roar for live blog coverage for what should be another exciting race from 11pm (AEST).

Monza; heralded as the Temple of Speed is very much one of the fastest circuits on the Formula One calendar. Even though it is 5.7km in length, it is comprised largely of straights and a handful of low-speed corners.

53-laps can often disappear in the blink of an eye – if uninterrupted. Though given incidents such as the infamous collision between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton in 2021 at the Rettifilo chicane or even Charles Leclerc’s crash in 2020 at Parabolica – Safety Cars can change the momentum.

Grid penalties are the talking point again heading into the race, with nine drivers set to start away from their qualifying positions. Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon have 5-place grid penalties, Sergio Perez drops 10 places and 15 places for Mick Schumacher, Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen.

Starting from the back of the grid, however, will be Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton and Yuki Tsunoda – who already had a penalty for accumulating five reprimands over the season. All of these drivers will be carrying fresh power-unit components at this power-sensitive track.

Leclerc stunned the Tifosi in the special 75th anniversary Ferrari livery for pole position and will be unaffected by penalties himself. Verstappen though with his minor penalty and the reshuffling of the grid is only a few positions behind the Monegasque – with expectation to come back forward with his race pace.

Reigning world champion Verstappen commands a 109-point lead in the standings over Leclerc and Red Bull teammate Perez who are tied. A first ever win for the Dutchman at Monza would ensure five different winners in the last five years here.

Though given this is the home race for Ferrari, there will be great expectation for the Scuderia to win on home soil. If their work in the pit-lane and on the pit-wall can be backed up by genuine race pace.
