The pressure of competing at the Olympics is tough enough for grown adults, yet alone teenagers.
Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci managed to defy the expectations of what a 14-year-old could achieve by creating history at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

On the uneven bars, Comaneci produced a flawless routine and judges awarded her the first perfect 10. The magnitude of the achievement was summed up by the fact the scoreboard was not equipped to show a perfect 10.
The teenager proved it was no fluke by going on to record a further six perfect 10s at the ’76 Games in various disciplines.
She won three gold medals for the balance beam, uneven bars and individual all-around making her the youngest all-around Olympic gold medalist in history.
After the highs of Montreal, Comaneci experienced her fair share of lows in the lead up to the 1980 Olympics. Her parents divorced and Romanian officials temporarily made her train away from her long-time coach Bela Karolyi.
She was often used as a political tool by the Romanian government to promote communism and was subsequently banned from travelling to western countries for fear she might defect. She eventually did defect to the United States in 1989.
With all the politics and her personal struggles to deal with, Comaneci still managed two gold medals at Moscow but fell off the uneven bars.
Comaneci retired from gymnastics in 1984 and spent time coaching the Romanian team before defecting to the United States.
She was named as one of the athletes of the century by the Loreus World Sports Academy.
