Melbourne Cup 2016: Full day schedule, race times and events

The Melbourne Cup is more than just one extraordinary “race that stops the nation,” it’s a full day of made up of ten races at Flemington and around Australia as well, with social events and lunches for many workplaces.

A ticket to Flemington can set back promising punters as much as $494, although a cheap ticket just on the grass is only $40.

The 2016 Melbourne Cup Carnival is promising to be one of the most entertaining in recent memory.

For the first time ever, Twitter will be broadcasting the Melbourne Cup for one hour from 2:30pm on the handle @FlemingtonVRC, allowing viewers worldwide to watch the ‘race that stops the nation.”

For those watching at home on free-to-air television, Channel 7 will once again be broadcasting the entire Melbourne Cup Day live, with coverage beginning at 10am (AEDT) and concluding at 5:30pm after the tenth race.

Pundits can also register for Racing+ on Racing.com to access complete coverage of all the races on all mobile, laptop and tablet devices.

For those at Flemington but without a view of the racecourse, the Stadium Vision mobile app can be downloaded, allowing racegoers to live stream races and watch video highlights of previous races.

For those who are feeling fashionably competitive, there’s also the Myer Fashions on the Field competition for both men and women in The Park.

The registration is open to women from 10:30-11:35am while the Design Award registration is open to all genders from 12:30-1pm.

10:40am The first race of the day, the Ottawa Stakes, begins and viewers can expect a preview of the race by Channel 7 shortly after their coverage begins.

Throughout the day, pundits can escape the horse racing and relax in The Park, an area that features a vintage Ferris Wheel and carousel alongside pony rides and face painting for any kids.

11:20am The Tab.com.au Trophy is set to begin with Model Dragon the favourite at $3.40.

12:00pm The Prince of Penzance Plate, fittingly named after the 2015 Cup winner and the second longest race of the afternoon at 2800m, begins at midday.

Those who are attending the race have plenty of options for food at The Park, from Biggie Smalls’ famous kebabs to some Jerusalem street food from Knafeh Bakery.

For dessert, racegoers have access to Messina Gelato, Doughnut Time and even a Lavazza Coffee Bar for an afternoon latte.

12:40pm The racing continues with the Lavazza Prontissimo, with Demonstrate a strong favourite sitting at $1.70.

One of two races that are only 1000m in length, the Schweppes #FlemingtonFling features Biased Witness which has placed in 75% of the races it participates in.

2:00pm The final race before the Melbourne Cup, the Lexus Hybrid Plate, kicks off and viewers can anticipate that Channel 7 will begin their dedicated preview of the big race as soon as the Plate finishes.

The usual parade of horses, trainers and jockeys is expected to ensue shortly after the finish of the Lexus Hybrid Plate and Channel 7 will likely be on the ground with the pre-race interviews in the build-up to the start of the race.

2013 X Factor winner and Eurovision song contestant Dami Im is scheduled to sing the national anthem before the race commences.

3:00pm The 3200m race has Hartnell favourite at $5.50.

Following the conclusion of the race, Channel 7 will televise the post-race celebrations and interview all the big names from the winners circle.

4:00pm The James Boag’s Premium Stakes starts but those who are still on the ground can be treated to an hour and a half of live music from Betty Who and Australian music icon Marcia Hines, concluding at 6:10pm.

4:40pm The second last race of the day starts, with four-year-old mare Ravi the favourite to win at $5.00.

5:15ap The racing concludes with the 1400m Kong Kong Jockey Club Stakes but those still on the ground can find food at The Park with Huxtaburger and the Cocktail Caravan Park providing the last refreshments before heading home.
