The Futurity Stakes is a Group 1 WFA event run over the seven furlongs (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse. This year’s edition looks relatively thin, although boasts some big name horses including the current Victoria Derby winner and CF Orr Stakes winner. Join us from 4pm AEST in the build up to the Futurity Stakes.

Moment of Change is the current race favourite and his connections will be hoping the recent race history continues with the last four favourites all saluting in the Futurity.

He will be looking to also emulate recent winners of this race All Too Hard (2013) and Typhoon Tracy (2010) by winning the CF Orr Stakes and Futurity Stakes double.

Niconero (2009) was the last galloper to take out the Futurity Stakes andamp; Australian Cup double. Horses such as Sertorius and Polanski will be looking to follow in his footsteps.

Let’s now take a look at each runner in this year’s race:

Sizzling – he was below his best last preparation but kept finding the line strongly late. Could the change in stable over to the leading trainer Chris Waller turn things around? His first up run was great, started from the widest gate, didn’t get to much cover and was strong late to finish third. He likes to get back so drawing an inside barrier could be a concern. Although, he should get every chance to gain clear galloping room within a nine horse field.

Moment of Change – current race favourite after edging out Eurozone in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes over 1400m. The seven furlongs looks to be his pet distance now with three wins from five attempts and especially the 1400m at Caulfield with three wins from three. He will be hard to beat here.

Pinwheel – his run first up in the Group 2 Expressway over 1200m was ok. He is now an 8yo and off the top of my head I can’t recall the last time he won. A few years ago he was one of my favourite horses but I think a Group 1 victory is beyond him now.

Sertorius – although he is classed as a ‘long-distance horse’, he boasts a good record first up with a couple of placings at the distance. His best will come later this prep when racing further but watch out for him hitting the line late.

Smokin’ Joey – he is very inconsistent. His previous prep started and finished off with last place finishes before showing a fantastic turn of foot to win second up and then finished a gallant second to Boban in the Group 1 Emirates. I would have to wait to see how he goes first up before wasting my hard earned on him, although he did trial well in beating home Speediness.

Clear For Action – No.

Lidari – I think he will be right in the mix here and especially if he could produce his form from the Spring. He was impressive by winning first up last prep over 1400m before finishing third to Fiorente at WFA in the Group 2 Feehan over the mile. He got tightened for room on the fence and only got clear late. $15 chance, I’ll be taking that.

Polanski – last year’s Victoria Derby winner has been scratched twice already this prep and looks to finally have his first up run here. Polanski is unbeaten over the 1400m at Caulfield (1/1) but faces tougher opposition here. He will be running on strong but his best will come later this preparation.

Bull Point – who can forget his run in the Golden Rose behind Zoustar. In my opinion he has returned even better than last prep after his win first up in the Group 3 Manfred. There he beat The Quarterback and Prince Harada who both ran very well last week behind the talented Hucklebuck. Drawn nicely and Oli stays on board.
