South Australian Derby entries

Now that the Sydney Autumn Carnival is done and dusted, our attention moves to South Australia where Morphettville will be host to some of the country’s best three-year-old stayers.

The prize money of half a million dollars for the South Australian Derby will ensure that a talented field lines up come Saturday. There are currently 16 starters and three emergencies named to run in this race.

First on the entry ballot is Gamblin Guru, a talented gelding who has won his last two starts by narrow margins. Although he does seem to have talent, he is known to pull a bit hard during races so there are question marks of whether or not he can settle down and get the job done at 2500 metres. Bookies were a little cautious until he drew barrier 19, so a good price can be found for him now.

The one that the bookies will be fearing the most is Order Of The Sun. The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt is coming off a seven-length win in the VRC St Leger on Anzac Day. He has attracted a lot of early attention in the betting, holding double the money of any other runner, and is currently a clear favourite.

On the next line of betting is Bring Something. He is also coming off an impressive last start, where he won by two lengths in a Listed race at Caulfield over 2400 metres. That reads as pretty good form leading into this race.

Second on the ballot and also in single figures in the early betting is the Anthony Cummings-trained gelding, Best Case. He is coming off an average run in the Australian Derby but his run before that was pretty good. He came from last to grab third in a Group 2 over 2000 metres at Randwick. Those two runs were both in heavy conditions so he should be nice and fit for this.

Two runners that should appreciate the extra distance on their last starts are Kushadasi and Scratchy Bottom. They were both strong in the finishing stages of their last runs over 2000 metres, which were in group company at Morphettville last Saturday in separate races. Scratchy Bottom was especially impressive coming from last to just miss out by a head.

One of the other runners that I would like to touch on who is a bit out of the betting is Crime Fighter. He was disappointing in the Australian Derby in his last start but that may have been due to the heavy conditions. His run before that at Moonee Valley was sound (he won by 2.5 lengths over 2040 metres). This is obviously a harder race but the Peter Moody-trained gelding appears to have some talent.
