Are there any more superlatives you can think of when it comes to Chautauqua?

His effort to win the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (1000m) just showed why he is the best sprinter in the world. At 200m out he looked under pressure and doing nothing, but as soon as you had that thought, he produced that customary brilliant finishing burst to nail Terravista right on the peg.

Looking back at the race, Terravista should have won. Oliver got his whip stuck somewhere for a couple of strides, and he lost momentum. As for Exosphere, I wouldn’t back him ever again in Melbourne. He was all over the place down the straight and never looked likely at all.

Back to Chautauqua, I can’t see how anything will beat him for the Autumn. Barring bad luck, and even considering his racing pattern, he just looks unbeatable, and only bad luck has beaten him over the last 18 months.

Does the CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) need to be discussed? I mean, dear me, really? It just leaves me head scratching how they could uphold the protest. Firstly, because there was nothing Zahra could do except cop the interference and break his neck and secondly because the interference was 900m out!

But I think the best run from the race was clearly River Wild. He bombed the start by four or five lengths where had he jumped, he would have got an absolute picnic in front. His last furlong against the tempo was excellent and is a real live chance for the Guineas.

Press Statement laid his claims to be the best three year old colt in Australia with a crushing win in the feature event at Rosehill, the Hobartville Stakes (1400m). He was ridden a treat by Bowman and when asked for the effort, he just went through the gears and did it easily.

The third horse Montaigne is a very good horse himself and he looks the main threat to Press Statement in the Randwick Guineas (1600m), but outside that pair, the race looked very thin, so I’d be cautious about Press Statement in regards to races like the George Ryder and Doncaster.

John Thompson produced one of the great training efforts in recent times when First Seal returned to racing a fantastic winner in the Millie Fox Stakes (1300m). She sat last in the small but Blake Shinn knew what he had underneath as he peeled outside Catkins and got the bikkies in a fantastic performance. She beat home Telepathic and I’ve Got The Looks.

As for Catkins, well I think retirement has to be seriously thought about. Apart from a Group l, she has nothing left to prove. But her effort here was very poor and just lacked any desire and want like the old Catkins used to do. If she runs again, she can go without my hard earned.
