The 2016 Melbourne Cup is scheduled to start at 3:00pm AEDT, on Tuesday November 1 at the Flemington racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria.

TV Schedule
The race will be broadcast on both Free-to-Air television via Channel Seven, and on Foxtel via channel 529, Racing.com.

Both Seven and Racing.com will provide full coverage of all races throughout the day beginning from 10:00am AEDT. Seven will offer continuous rolling coverage of the entire event, while Racing.com will focus on races themselves, switching between Flemington and the country races in Echuca. The first race of the day at Flemington is scheduled for 10:40am AEDT.

Racing.com will also provide a full recap of racing from Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington from 6:15 – 7:15pm.

The Melbourne Cup itself is scheduled to get underway at 3:00pm AEDT. Based on past results, the race should go for about three and a half minutes before the winner passes the post.

The Channel Seven broadcast will end at 5:30pm AEDT, with the Racing.com broadcast set to end at the completion of the final race which begins at 5:15pm AEDT.

British horse Hartnell is the current favourite to win the race at $4.20 in the betting, four-year-old mare Jameka who recently claimed victory in the Caulfield Cup is $5.50; Almandin is presently the third favourite at $11 with Bondi Beach and Heartbreak City the next two in line at $13 a piece. Rose of Virginia could leave a thorn in the side of bookmakers if the seven-year-old bay mare can somehow muster a win, given it’s current price of $501.

Entertainment won’t be limited to the track as Flemington Racecourse prepares to throw one hell of a party. The off-course entertainment will occur in The Park.

The Park is the newest addition to the Flemington Racecourse playground. Located on the hill, adjacent to the train station, The Park is free to enter for all Melbourne Cup Carnival ticket holders.

As always the Myer’s Fashion in the Field competition will be in full swing for the ladies throughout the day. Same day registration is accepted between 10.30am to 11.35am

There will also be live dance and music performances in The Park throughout the day. Pop singer Betty Who and Australian stalwart Marcia Hines will headline the entertainment.

Dami Im will perform the Australian national anthem before the Cup race.

History
The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s most prestigious racing event and is known as ‘the race that stops a nation’.

It is held at 3:00pm AEDT on the first Tuesday of November every year, meaning that in 2016 it falls on November 1. Gates open on the day at 8:15am with the first race scheduled for 10:40am.

The first race was held in 1861 and was held over two miles, but that has since been adjusted to the metric measurement of 3200m.

Kingston Rule currently holds the record for the fastest finish at the race with a time of 3:16.3 set in 1990.

Only five horses in history have claimed victory in the Melbourne Cup twice, and only one of those, Makybe Diva, has won on three occasions (2003, 2004, 2005).

Michelle Payne became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup when she rode Prince of Penzance in 2015. Max Dynamite ran second and Criterion third.
