Sydney racing this Saturday heads to Rosehill for a nine-race card, while in Melbourne a tricky program has been assembled for Moonee Valley. Here are my five plays across the afternoon.
Bet 1: Win – Rosehill Race 1, number four: Pedicel
The Hayes/Dabernig stable train this filly, who was solid in betting when debuting over 1100 metres at Canterbury, and like in the trials, she was niggled at before the turn but she kept finding and was strong to the line. She’ll have no issue with seven furlongs and has upside. I think she can knock off the unbeaten Ronstar.
Bet 2: Each-way – Rosehill Race 3, Number 12: Haames
This is a solid highway, but I can’t believe this one is $15+. He ran in the Radiant Choice Highway here a fortnight back and I thought his effort for a three-year-old was very good. Closed off really well nearer the inside to run third. The extra 100 metres will suit him ideally and if he can sit closer in the run, he’ll take some beating.
Bet 3: Win – Rosehill Race 9, number four: Manolo Blahniq
I think if we get to a good four or soft five, he’s the best at Rosehill. He needs it dryish to be a threat, which is why he was a late scratching from the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill last Friday. He resumed over 1100 metres here and worked home okay near the inside behind Albumin but 1100 metres isn’t his go. This is 1200 to 1400 metres, so I think he gets his chance.
Bet 4: Each-way – Moonee Valley Race 4, number nine: Moonlites Choice
If she naturally progresses from the resumption, she’s the one to beat. This mare was 11 months between runs when resuming over this track/distance a fortnight back where I thought Williams was just too negative on her and she really had no hope where she was behind Moonlover. If she can blend in earlier with the run under the belt, I’m convinced she’s the best horse in the race, and $6 is okay.
Bet 5: Each-way: Moonee Valley Race 9, number 12: Sixties Groove
If he puts everything together, he’s the best at the Valley for sure. He was off the map when resuming at this track/distance two weeks back where he got back to near last in the run. Williams eased him wide on the turn, built good momentum and surged, but he wanted to lay in badly behind Jacquinot Bay. If he puts it together, I think he wins.
