A 10-race meeting in Bendigo scheduled for today has been called off, after a deluge of rain lashed the Victorian city overnight and rendered the track unsafe.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Racing Victoria cited “extensive surface water” from 1800-1400m and 1000-500m as the reason for the abandonment – with a further 21mm of rainfall overnight exacerbating the situation badly.

The track had previously been rated a Soft 7.

The decision means the state will have no racing events taking place today, with reportedly no decision on rescheduling having been made just yet.

It was already shaping up to be a compromised day of action, with several horses scratched from almost every race of the day.

Fourth race favourite Mister Mogul and tenth race favourite Hakerak had already withdrawn, while a bevy of contenders in other races – including Our Sevira and Blazejowski – were off the cards as well.

In Adam Page’s Behind the Barriers piece for today, he had Mirimar in Race 7 as one of the top five bets for the day.

Punters will instead have to turn their attention to Canterbury Park (NSW), Sunshine Coast (QLD), Gawler (SA) or Belmont (WA) for horse racing action today.

Victorian racing fans will have to wait until Warrnambool tomorrow and Geelong Synthetic on Friday to get their fix.
