TWO GOOD! Zahra wins back-to-back Melbourne Cups on Without a Fight as three horses pull up lame
Without a Fight completed the rare Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double on Tuesday as star jockey Mark Zahra went back-to-back in the big one after…
An important lead-up, potentially, to the Melbourne Cup is the Geelong Cup (2400m) and that race highlights a bumper nine-race card on Wednesday at Geelong.
Here are my five plays for the meeting.
Bet One – Each Way – Geelong Race One Number 1 Prinz Hlodowig
Just hoping he doesn’t give away too much start. He’s done that at his past couple, firstly at Mornington behind Steel Prince before going to Bendigo and working home well late behind Not An Ambiturner.
This is a smaller field, so hopefully he isn’t far away in the run. I think $8+ is more than acceptable.
Bet: $20 Win/$30 Place at $8/$2.35 (Sportsbet)
Bet Two – Each Way – Geelong Race Four Number 2 Gold Fields
He attempted to lead all the way over the 1550m on the Parks track in Adelaide last time and he gave a decent enough kick when asked for the big effort but couldn’t quite finish it off when fourth to Adatto.
Senior jock back on and should get a good run on the pace. I think he’ll give a great sight in front.
Bet: $10 Win/$20 Place at $14/$4 (BetEasy)
Bet Three – Each Way – Geelong Race Six Number 5 Ligulate
Clearly the forgotten horse IMO. He doesn’t have the A1 form compared to most of these, but he’s got the upside and is in the right stable.
He ran over 1870m at Newcastle last Tuesday where he got back off the pace but worked home strongly when third to Semper Fidelis. Good draw, Bowman on and up in trip looks a big tick. $14+ is overs.
Bet: $20 Win/$40 Place at $14/$3.75 (Bet365)
Bet Four – Each Way – Geelong Race Seven Number 4 Wall Of Fire
The price of Withhold is gone, so I think each way you can back this horse. The Maher/Eustace team is flying and this bloke looks set up to run really well third up.
He ran in the St Leger at Randwick last time and was very good off a moderate tempo when fourth to stablemate Big Blue. He’ll be much better suited on firmer footing and I think he’s clear overs.
Bet: $10 E/W (Tote)
Bet Five – Each Way – Geelong Race Eight Number 11 Teleplay
Not the strongest of mares races and I think she’s clearly on the up. She jumped out well prior to resuming in a field of seven at Ballarat where she looked in a sticky spot early on but once she got clear air, it was game over and she won with class and authority.
Up to 1200m looks beneficial as should the more genuine tempo.
Bet: $25 E/W Place at $8.5/$2.8 (BetEasy)
Total spent: $210
