Shraaoh has won Race 4 at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day, beating out Steel Prince and Azuro over a distance of 2800 metres in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Plate.

The trio galloped away from the rest of the field when the hammer dropped over the final 400 metres and no one was going to challenge Shraaoh, who was ridden by Kerrin McEvoy and trained by Chris Waller. Shraaoh got a spectacular run up the middle, with the track starting to dry out after being pummeled by rain during the morning which caused it to chance from a Good 4 to a Soft 8.

With three pre-race scratchings, the field was cut from 17 to 14 horses. Those horses were Berisha, Shimrano and Charlie Road.

It was Etah James who jumped well and took the early lead, with Sherlock Holmes and Sasko also up near the front during the early going. Still, Etah James did the majority of the work up against the rail during the first 700 metres, before Sasko made a move to take the lead.

The field then began to stretch out with Sasko putting the pace down and Darabad coming through for second. Etah James and Sherlock Holmes dragged the rest of the field along, but were multiple lengths behind at the halfway point of the race.

Shraaoh was paying around the $6.50 mark to take the win after receiving plenty of late money in the markets.
