In the blink of an eye, the 2018 Melbourne Cup is over and punters’ hearts are in their throats as they confirm the winning trifecta and quinella.

The day was, as usual, defined by anxious checks of the weather radar and outrageous fashion choices. The former proved crucial after a morning of miserable Melbourne weather caused havoc at Flemington, altering track conditions and leading race odds to sway heavily in favour of horses who were tipped to perform well on a less-than-desirable track.

It didn’t scare many punters away from trying their luck on a trifecta, quinella or any other exotic bet, where the greater risk warrants a greater reward.

The race, which was understandably impacted by the poor conditions, came down to a thrilling conclusion.

The result proved a huge upset and the quinella and trifecta are notoriously tricky to get right as it is.

Cross Counter crossed the line first, followed by Marmelo and A Prince of Arran in that order.

First: Cross Counter
Second: Marmelo
Third: A Prince of Arran

The top three runners will define whether or not your trifecta or quinella came up the goods. The finishing order shows the winning quinella and trifecta as follows:
