Pre-race favourite Garner proved to be a smart pick for the winner in the 2019 Schweppervescence Plate at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
The three-year-old bay gelding shorted to less than $4 as the favourite ahead of the race, but the second-favourite Athiri wasn’t able to figure in the placings.

Jockeyed by Dwayne Dunn and trained by GV Richards, Garner took the win from Can’t Be Done in second and Hawker Hurricane in third.
The win is Garner’s third in its career, after earlier this year taking out the Punters.com.au Living Legends Plate at Caulfield in September.
