It takes a painstaking process over several months to piece together the Melbourne Cup field, but finally it has been whittled down to the 24 horses who will compete for Australian racing’s ultimate prize in 2019.

This year’s field includes just one previous winner, Cross Counter, who won 2018 Melbourne Cup and sits at the top of the order.

Cross Counter drew barrier No.5, a gate that has produced more winners than any other so far in Melbourne Cup history, putting the thoroughbred in a position where he just might go back-to-back.

If he does so, Cross Counter will be the first repeat winner of the Melbourne Cup since Makybe Diva won the race on three consecutive occasions in 2003-2005.

However, it is Japan’s Mer De Glace who goes in as the pre-race favourite, narrowly ahead of Constantinople.

Mer De Glace recently won the Caulfield Cup and the five-year-old’s Jockey, Damian Lane, also rode to a victory in the Victoria Derby this weekend past.

The cup has seen only one scratching in the past four years but if there are any ahead of the 2019 edition, we will update this page immediately with that information.
