There are two meetings to look at on Saturday night, with my attention being at Menangle and Melton.

Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Menangle

Best bet: Race 2, Number 1, Chubby Checker
This horse is four from four since arriving from NZ and he can make it five from five. Jason Grimson is fast becoming one of the best in the business at improving a tried horse and this guy is another example. All four wins have come at the track, the last two over 2300 metres. This horse has gate speed, so he should hold the front and that is usually the spot to be over this longer trip.

Next best: Race 5, Number 1, Kash Us Back
This horse is unlucky not to get a start in the final. He was brave at Bathurst. He did a power of work to find the front and was left a sitting shot for those behind, just getting bloused late. He should have little trouble holding the front here from the pole and that Bathurst run does look quite strong.

Value: Race 9, Number 4, Sobomba
This is a tricky trot race to close out the meeting. This guy is worth a speck at odds. Forgive and forget his last start effort. He was very tardy away from the stand and lost all chance from that point. His manners are hit and miss but if he can do everything right here, he can be dangerous at a price.

Best bet: Race 2, Number 9, Cover Of Darkness
He bolts in or he gallops, losing all hope. He has the runs on the board. He has Chris Alford steering. He has trialled like a jet. He bolts in. This horse is a high-class four-year-old that resumes for Emma Stewart and is regarded as the rising star of the Australian trotting ranks. This is heart in your mouth, I’m sure, but his best is better than these.

Next best: Race 1, Number 8, Patsbeachstorm
He deserves another chance. This horse is a NSW Derby winner that was odds-on in a heat of this series when resuming. He was very plain given the class and quality he has. This horse has drawn inside the second row. The rub of the green needs to go his way. If it does, I’m confident he can bounce back.

Value: Race 6, Number 8, Heavenly Sign
This girl is worth a 1×3 speck at odds. This horse debuted at Ballarat in a heat of this series. This horse was tardy away but worked to get outside the speed. She just tired late and rightfully so given the run she had. This time around she’ll do no work and should she hold leaders back, she’ll run a much more positive race.
