Half-time summary

Another bout of sloppy handling from the Penrith Panthers sees them trailing Newcastle 14-6 at half-time at Pepper Stadium.
They’ve been guilty of pushing passes and loose carries again to put themselves in the position where they’ll need to come back in the second half to win.
They could be trailing by more. The Knights had an opportunity to open the scoring in the fourth minute of the match, but bombed an overlap by throwing a forward pass. A potential Shaun Kenny-Dowall four-pointer in the corner went begging.
Eight minutes later, Newcastle ran the ball on the short side and Aidan Guerra charged onto the ball to score out wide.
They were in again six minutes later after Kalyn Ponga put in a deft grubber kick and centre Cory Dennis led the chase to score. Ponga is playing five-eighth today in a late positional switch and looks dangerous there.
Penrith hit back with a try against the run of play in the 25th minute, after a jolting tackle by Corey Harawira-Naera forced the ball from young Newcastle fullback Nick Meaney as he was returning a kick. Young Panthers’ five-eighth Tyrone May was on hand to pick up the scraps and score under the posts.
Harawira-Naera turned from hero to villain though in the restart set, losing the ball early. The Knights made them pay with centre Sione Mata’utia charging onto the ball to score.
Newcastle have had a strong breeze at their back in the first half which will favour Penrith in the second forty minutes, but the the Panthers will need to improve their handling. Their completion rate in the first half was just 43%.
Newcastle’s handling hasn’t been much better in what has been a sloppy first half, but it’s been good enough for them to score three tries.
