Footy tragic. Dockers diehard. No claim to expertise - just gut-feeling and passion.

Brilliant. Loved reading this.

And also the comments from other Roarers sharing their experiences.

I have the same frustrations as you when it comes to understanding footy talk, so I’ve started managing a women’s footy team. I’m learning heaps from the coaches and players, and thoroughly enjoying myself in the process.

Excellent. Thanks for your insights.

AFL media misses the point, yet again

Great concept. Decent production quality. I liked there being two hosts and the expert call-ups. I’m not much for sports other than footy, but it was still engaging. Noice one.

Alright, stay with me Don. I need to pick your brain more. Just don’t completely vilify me if I say something stupid.

I agree that Darcy needs to be in the team with the understanding that he is simply a hit-out machine, and our strategy for clearances adjusts accordingly. Perhaps with time he’ll develop the skills and agility that will make him more versatile in this role.

From social media posts, it seems Cox is more likely than Hamling. I always liked Cox up forward, but do you definitely see him in the back now? Who’s our best small forward lock down defender?

I’ll admit that I’m starting to see value to Taberner, but what do you do with someone who’s a big, tall bloke and can take a strong contested mark but can’t kick goals? Hone his goal-kicking skills, or move him further up the ground to act as a target to get it into our attacking half? (I already feel like you’re going to tell me he can kick goals and nothing needs to change…)

Ballas has to retire at some time, so who do you think is best placed to replace him? Really loved Switkowski’s movement on the weekend, but will he be able to hold the line and our structures as well as Ballas does (has)?

Should Banfield be in?

And look at you exercising your freedom of speech but within the bounds of your employment by choosing the word ‘jerk’ instead something far more derogatory. It’s not that hard, Izzy.

Izzy, you're a complete...

I don’t always like how you “speak up Freo”, but I do see you as one of the personalities that makes this particular forum so vigorous. Plus, most of us mob could be accused of similar ‘crimes’.

What do you think are our key challenges against GWS?

Oooh, I was ready for a rant about funds funneled into nonsense rather than AFLW. Nice work, Ryan.

Well, that accounts for how quiet you’ve been. Hope you’re unleashed and uncensored soon enough.

Thanks, JB. I must admit though, seeing as this is a post about goals, we didn’t hit the scoreboard in our first game…

Are you being moderated, Don?

I have a long drive to work so podcasts work perfectly for me. Someone else on here mentioned The Purple Reign podcast. It’s Freo-focussed, but Duck and Oz often talk about player roles and a little bit of tactics. You might not enjoy the rest of the talk around those moments, but I find it entertaining and informative.

I’m going to try Trends out today.

In a desperate attempt to understand more about structures and strategies, I’ve signed myself up to help manage a women’s footy team, and I’m hoping being a part of the inner sanctum will provide this information.

AFL media misses the point, yet again

Yeah, some fair calls, but I still think they got closer than I ever expected so I’ll take that as a positive. I thought Conca was decent, but Wilson is definitely out of sorts.

Lyon is copping a heap of flack about skills, so I’m waiting to see if the coaching team responds or keeps flogging their same training routine.

Eight talking points from AFL Round 4

It’s got to be St Kilda, right? To be this anti-Lyon and Freo?

AD, you’ve just made me realise I’ve been using punters incorrectly instead of pundits. Jeez, you’re a switched on young person.

You’ve hardly mentioned Freo in your first four instalments of Talking Points. Are you worried the Freo crew will hijack your post?

Since when did loyalty become a dirty word in sport?

Isn’t it a two-way street? Players equally rely on their supporters’ loyalty, particularly when the chips are down and we keep showing up week in and week out. There’s a reason ‘fair weather supporter’ has negative connotations.

However, it’s still fine with me if loyalty isn’t enough to keep a player at a club because there are better opportunities out there for them. As it is also fine if it stings a bit to see them go.

I think Hooker’s signing to the Eagles must be incredibly exciting for her and could potentially lead to a captaincy role, which perhaps has been out of her reach at the Dockers. Doesn’t mean that I’m not disappointed to lose her, and I think that’s a pretty normal reaction.

On one hand we have punters saying we shouldn’t want loyalty from our players, and on the other hand, we have the Dockers’ leadership group (off the back of their re-signing) talking proudly about being one-team players, wanting to stick together and be in it for the long haul. Even Bowers said she jumped at the chance to re-sign with the Dockers so she could demonstrate her loyalty to a club that has been so loyal to her.

I think it’s impractical to expect complete and utter loyalty from players to one club, but I also think it’s impractical to expect supporters not to care about loyalty from their players.

No loyalty in AFLW? What sport are you watching?

I guess the hiccup is that kids are going to idolise who they want and they won’t understand all the ‘reasoned’ arguments being made as to why they shouldn’t.

Should footy players be role models?

I’d say Martin fits the bill based on your criteria: “a role model is a status which must be earned through building one’s reputation”.

Should footy players be role models?

The blokes on Purple Reign podcast suggested Wilson is damn tired since becoming a new dad lol
He’s definitely flat.

Eight talking points from AFL Round 3

We had such a split personality out there. I’d see McCarthy use his body beautifully to hustle a mark and then kick it straight to a St Kilda player; Taberner take a stonking mark – running hard in front of his opposition player – and then miss the goals entirely; Langdon compose himself under pressure to handball perfectly out of defense and then the receiving player faff around trying to figure out what they wanted to do with it. Even Sonny, who overall had a great game, constantly fumble handballs that came his way because he was running like he was already in possession of it.

Yep, Neale will be a Brownlow contender if he keeps going as he has been. Dunno who Josh has been talking to, but Neale has always been highly rated, at least by Dockers supporters.
