Love my League love my Union, Actually I love all sports just in varying degrees. My name is Phillip Tovey. My blog is www.looseheadprop.com.au and as you can take from my blog name I am a bit of a rugby tragic. Love both league and Union and am a Life Member of the Moorebank Rugby League Football Club, but have aligned myself in recent years with the game they play in heaven, starting the Alexandria Dukes Rugby Football Club which I am the President. I’m married to a gorgeous, smart, amazing, woman who supports me in all my endeavors. We have a son who is our world. I am lucky to have them both. wpid-2013-08-03-20.55.26.png My blog like my posts on the roar will not be serious all the time and will be a place for me to vent, share opinion and jokes. Hopefully if your reading this you can understand sarcasm and not take things too serious. Roar on.

A guy I played rugby with had a similar experience in the fact that they were repeat offender, and for less than this joker, and my rugby mate was given a 6 month sentence.

There should be zero tolerance for this and a specified consistent consequences. These should be harsh mind you.

1. You drink and drive you loose your licence for a period with a huge fine.
2. You drink and drive again you loose your licence FOREVER and then go to Jail for a period of time.

This needs to be raised in a national forum.

I cannot believe that Carney has walked away from this. It is a load of you know what

Todd Carney avoids jail for drink-driving charge

Waratahs do not have the depth that is needed to be a true competitor. Should they go close to winning it will be due to the fact that there are no injuries to any of the starting 15.

However as can be seen with the list of players on the sideline, and players who are playing with quite large injuries there really is no chance for them. As I have said on other strings it has not looked good depth wise from the initial game against the Fiji team in the trials

Tahs with injuries include Phil Waugh (calf), Lachie Turner (elbow), Benn Robinson (rib), Al Baxter (thumb), Berrick Barnes (concussion), Tatafu Polota-Nau (knee) and Wycliff Palu (hamstring).

Why we love the Reds and not the Waratahs

I’m gonna try that next time the Chef comes back and says that a medium cooked steak is Medium rare.

To date that has only happened to me once where the Chef argued a point like that. In the end he asked us to leave immeadiatley. Which was good for us, cause we had eaten 4 $20 entree’s and 2 $60 bottles of red.

Maybe the Tahs can give away 2 for 1 pies, hot dogs and beers as a peace offering for the fans for 10 years of under achieving.

Critics of Waratah booers miss the point

I read the first paragraph of the Matt Burke’s article and thought you upity little —-! His comment were very condescending. I’ll boo if I want to boo. You don’t need to tell us that is a hard game. Most rugby supporters have either played the game or been involved enough to know that. We pay our money so these blokes can earn a living doing a job that most men of any age would love to have. You play badly we get up set.

Its abit like going to a Steak Restaurant. You pay $40 for a steak and ask for medium rare and you get well done. Are you gonna take that. NO WAY. That that back and get me a new steak cooked the way I want it. Now the waiter gets me a new steak and comps me for the meal.

Unfortunately the NSW Rugby Union and Matt burke does not understand that we are consumers and rugby (unlike a steak dinner) doesn’t lend itself to going back to the start of the game and doing it over. Given the reported state of finances in NSW Rugby they won’t be giving us refunds either.

So to communicate with these blokes we have 3 real options to explain our displeasure and ensure they know that its not good enough:

1. The delayed method – Not turning up to the game putting NSW rugby in more trouble;
2. The indirect method – Whinging and biatching on the Roar and other social media about it and hope that they read which given the burke comments they are too on themselves anyway;
3. The direct method – booing, It happens then and there. it is humiliating and very uncomfortable. But far and away makes someone never want to be in that position ever again.

So boys have a bit of heart tonight and kill these Cheifs and you poncy leather padded elbow old school boy type pull your head in, and think about the last time you returned a steak.

Critics of Waratah booers miss the point

I went a bit off topic. But hey it comes down to what you like. If enough people like it or become used to it it takes off. End of. Personally I like all of them for their own reasons, but would rather play rugby.

Why are there code wars?

Football of any code really goes back to Polo. What is their concept? Get a ball through 2 posts.
In the beginning the less fortunate did not have horses and were forced to watch the Royal and Aristocratic play Polo. These people saw that it was fun but could not participate, so they decided to start their own game similar to the aristocrats. They played Polo on foot. Genius!!!

Same main concept as Polo without the horses and the sticks and with something a little easier to kick and catch than a piece of wood.

Giving thought to this as the origin of football, the dimensions of a polo pitch and concept of scoring a goal ball between 2 posts, leads me to say that Aussie Rules is possibly the closest thing that is currently played that could be considered original football, something for people to argue about a bit later.

However ,many forget that Football of any kind has only been associated into codes since the mid 1800’s. Before then teams decided upon the rules of the game, to be played on the day. The reason different codes were formed was because people wanted to play with different rules and could not agree upon rules. So in a way it was a bit like a dating website just a way of putting like people in touch with each other.

What would clubs profiles would look like today ?

Club 1 – “Hi my names Sheffield Football club, I like kicking the ball but don’t like handling it. I don’t mind having a cross bar which the ball must go under, but please no hacking and my shins.”

Club 2 – “Hi my names Twickenham football Club, I like being able to run with the ball in hand, but I also like to be able to kick it and think that if a cross bar is used it should be kicked over it. I don’t mind a lot of close up action and think that you should be able to do anything to get the ball through the posts. Most of my club men work as Lawyers and doctors and enjoy getting really ”

Club 3 – Hi my names Melbourne Football club. I’m here in Australia, not willing to travel, but we have lots of room down here. I like playing football like the old days, kicking the ball through posts. I don’t mind the rough stuff but like it fast and flowing.

Club 4 – “Hi my names Eastern Suburbs Football Club, I like being able to run with the ball in hand, but I also like to be able to kick it and think that if a cross bar is used it should be kicked over it. I don’t mind a lot of close up action and think that you should be able to do anything to get the ball through the posts and over the white line”

Why are there code wars?

Phil Waugh tackles in the same vein as Paul Gallen from the Sharks. They just through their whole body at the game. But I would have liked Phil Waugh about 5 – 6 years ago for league. I think his body would take a beating moving now.

Five rugby players the NRL should poach

Rocky Eksom spent two seasons with the Canterbury Bulldogs rugby league club in Sydney and was a front-rower prop in their 2001 premiership-winning Jersey Flegg side.

Anyway, My choice number 1 would be Pocock. He is an animal around the pitch.

Number 2 – Tatafu Polata-Nau. Similar reasons.

Number 3 – Kurtley Beale. I’d love him to come over to the Dragons just as Ben Hornby calls quits. think he’d fit in there quite well at half.

Number 4 – I think Drew Mitchell would make a decent enough League player

Number 5 – Matt Giteau would make any starting side as a number 6 or 7.

Five rugby players the NRL should poach

To the Wizard of OZ If I only had a heart….

When a Team’s an empty vessel and they should be on their mettle,
And yet their torn apart.
Just because I’m presumin’ that they are sub-human,
If they only had a heart.
They’ are tender and their gentle and awful sentimental
And so their fans depart.
They may have bitten on a pillow …
for the boys who shoot the arrows
Because they have no heart.

Waratahs pick themselves up

Two pathetic performances in the last 2 games. The Tahs have no heart. Hopefully they travel to see the Wizard to see if he can give them at least one heart between the 15 of them.

Waratahs pick themselves up

I am not a fan of fat bum Carter, but at least he held the ball and went forward. Unlike Barnes and Krapalani who couldn’t catch or pass but decided trying the same kicking drill a hundred times and thought that would reap benefits. Maybe it would have should they have been able to do the first to things on the list.

Why did we have so much loose ball. Everytime we went into contact the ball came out the back of the ruck at a hundred miles an hour 10 metres behind and/or was turned over. Beale for all his hard work was the worst for this.

Pathetic all round.

Waratah lambs to the Cheetah slaughter

Look the A-League is boring as Bat excreement. Barring the final last weekend there was no real excitment through out the season.

I love watching a good game of footy as long as it is played well. But the A-League this year did not come into that category. 3 Sydney games this year and I felt very ripped off (even though they did win 2 of them).

We don’t have the support and i’m not sure how to get it. But Changing kits, benches and stadiums is not really the issue. Making the game pretty enough to get a Free to Air network excited about it then you may have something. But really it seems the A-League is on a hiding to nothing.

How does the FFA turn the huge playing base in Australia into bUms on seats at A-League games? That should be the question.

Seven simple ways to fix the A-League

Are you suggesting possibly there was some type of corruption in the France Italy game?

Could a betting scandal happen in Union?

You know you have too much time on your hands when you sit down and predict every game of the season and the post your predictions for the season on a blog. But that’s what I have done.

1 – Dragons
2 – Bulldogs
3 – Titans
4 – Raiders
5 – Wests Tigers
6 – Storm
7 – Broncos
8 – Warriors
9 – Panthers
10 – Sea Eagles
11 – Knights
12 – Roosters
13 – Rabbitohs
14 – Eels
15 – Cowboys
16 – Sharks

Dragons were undefeated. Roosters had 2nd year syndrome like the Bulldogs last year. Positions 4 – 10 all finished on equal Points. Sharks only won 4 games.

Who's your tip to take out the NRL title in 2011?

Fortunately that didn’t happen.

I like it the way it is now. Maybe have a WA team in so I can have a reason to go back to my favourite wineries in the Margaret River when the Dragons play over there.

But really the competion back then was the way it was cause of the population. Teams need to be setup where the populus is. Then people can identify with the team.

Maybe taking a different tact on this topic, should teams not moved outwards and died off etc, Would we have a situation where the population also didn’t move? “Stuff moving to Parramatta, they don’t have a footy team, i’m staying in Balmain.”

It may have made Sydney a different city. Maybe Sydney would all be high rises centralised around football grounds.

I also think you may find Newcastle was in the mix back in the day.

Imagine if NRL had retained first ever clubs

Nothing wrong with the current system. No need to make tries 6 points. Players shouldn’t be giving away penalties so that penalty goals can be kicked. As for Field Goals. It is a part of the game.
Deal with it. Make it so that your defence keeps them out of the attacking part of the field.

Does rugby's scoring system need changing?

I was embarassed by the Tahs last week.

One player (Barnes) out of the starting lineup for the backs and the backs can’t string 3 passes together without it going to ground. Then one player (Polota-Nau) out of the forwards and we fall apart, and can’t scrummage and we look like school boys again,.

It was the same type of performance last Friday that I saw in the trial against Fiji going back 5 weeks ago. After the first few weeks , I had given them the benefit of the doubt that it was only a trial. But it was proven last Friday that the Tahs do not have the depth to win the Super 15’s this year (I hope i’m wrong).

The player pool is too thin as has been noted above by many, and whilst it pains me to say it, I think Rugby is on a hiding to nothing in the long term as well as the short term. There’s just not enough people playing it all areas of the country.

How does the ARU fix that? I’m not sure they can. They have had their head in the sand for so long it may never be able to come out. Until they get kids playing it in Public schools they will always struggle.

Expected and unexpected cream rises to the top

Hahahahaha

Is Australia a country divided by sport?

I agree with most things which have been posed here. However, he was not low range really. he was 0.05 and he should have been zero. You would think that he would know the rules given his past endeavours.

Stupidity is not an excuse

Why Todd Carney deserves one last chance

“I hope the Wallabies lose!” TREASON!! Who said this give me their details, they need to be put in a cell next to Sam Ayoub and Ryan Tandy. Bring back corpral punishment and show them the error of their ways.

I cannot understand why an Aussie would not go for their Natioanl team in anything.

I love footy of any code. I won’t lie, I do have my favourites and I bag the lower ranked ones on a regular basis, but when it comes to a National team get me on the band wagon. I’ll be there in green and gold with a silly wig on possibly wearing the Aussie Flag as a cape singing songs and giving a some stick to the opposition (Its best when its the Brits). That’s the way it should be.

Really people get over this Code wars cr@p and be thankful that there is so much footy to watch.

Is Australia a country divided by sport?

This is true

Is Australia a country divided by sport?

Could not happen logically with any form of salary cap.

Would Australian sport benefit from mid-season trades?

Spot on re the drinking and driving. He should do jail time if he has been done before. There are too many chances in the world for this crime. You drink and drive you loose your licence for what ever time limit. You do it again and you go to Jail and never get a licence again.

Why Todd Carney deserves one last chance

He is a twat. But don’t get me wrong he is the same as so many professional sports stars who read to much of their own press and think their invincible.

I was speaking to a mate from the North Queensland region recently. He travels to Atherton regularly for his GF and when the topic of Carney was brought up his whole persona changed.

Whilst most of the commentators have put him on a pedistal for his changed ways and fantastic return to the game it seems that he didn’t really change at all. Based on comments made he was a menace up there and they were glad to see the back of him.

Drinking binges, Married women, Fights. You name it he was into it. It was never covered up there because really who goes to Atherton.

I blame the media for his situation now, cause they made so much out of him last year and now he has done something wrong and is black balled for it. maybe they should have done more research before making him a martor.

Does he desrve another chance? Probably not. But…Why not. We seem to give a thousand chances to every other sports star who has done anyting wrong.

Why Todd Carney deserves one last chance

My prediction (unfounded of course)
