Fascinating to see the premiership odds today. In some cases all four teams within a dollar of each other. I doubt it’s ever seemed this even at this stage

Five talking points from the AFL semi-finals

And you should apologise to actual realists.

Is Tom Lynch in strife for kneeing Saints opponent?

I’m a little surprised Cotchin didn’t get any kind of sanction, but only a little.

A fine is right for Lynch, but it doesn’t seem to deter him. Maybe one option would be to link the amount to the individual player’s salary.

Is Tom Lynch in strife for kneeing Saints opponent?

Hell no I wouldn’t say it to Lynch’s face!

He’d wait until I was on the ground and kick me in the ribs.

He won’t get suspended for this incident. He’ll get another fine.

We had a discussion on this site earlier in the year about what a bouchedag Lynch is, with everyone agreeing that punching guys in the gut, or getting stuck into opponents when they’re on the ground, was poor form. Except for a handful of Richmond fans, who were incensed at that idea.

Lynch isn’t a ‘competitive beast’. He isn’t ‘pushing the envelope’. There’s nothing ‘hard and tough’ about his behaviour. He’s just a stickhead.

I thought it was the right call.

Score review strikes again as another controversial call gobsmacks commentators

Boy, Realist does *not* like it when Richmond lose.

AFL semi-final forecast: Richmond vs St Kilda

I don’t know if Richmond were complacent last week. I think the Lions were very well prepared for a team that had beaten them 15 times in a row.

It’ll be interesting to see if Ratten adapts to Richmond the way Fagan did, sacrificing some attacking options at stoppages to negate the Tigers’ strengths. I think St Kilda have more to lose from that arrangement than the Lions did.

The Saints probably need to play to their strengths, and try to outrun the Tigers. Richmond don’t have many weaknesses, but a possible one is they haven’t had much success when required to come from behind. If St Kilda can get a jump on them maybe they can hold on.

More likely I think the Tigers will absorb the pressure and have more success on the counterattack than they did last week. I think they’re smarting a little, and might just put the foot on the pedal late in the game.

AFL semi-final forecast: Richmond vs St Kilda

Definitely not the biggest news today, but I see Jack Macrae finished 4th in the Dogs’ B&F. Behind Tom Liberatore, despite playing fewer games than him.

Which begs the question; why on earth was Macrae in every All-Australian team I saw? Was it some sort of group-think on a grand scale?

Where to next for the Eagles and Dogs after failed 2020 campaigns?

If Brisbane were forced to trade away their first round picks and got second round picks back, it really doesn’t matter where they finished during those years.
EDIT: The Brisbane comparison is silly, FWIW. I know it’s not yours PD. But then there have been Blues fans eager to embrace it in the past.
Brisbane have gotten a lot of stuff right lately, on top of a healthy dose of good luck. It’s not realistic to look at them as the benchmark for improvement.

AFL Trades: Adam Saad's decision spells disaster for Essendon

I’m surprised too. I always thought Brisbane were a smokescreen for some other club.

AFL Trades: Adam Saad's decision spells disaster for Essendon

Brisbane weren’t really building their list up from 2010-2014. Not one of their first round draft picks from that period is still at the club.

AFL Trades: Adam Saad's decision spells disaster for Essendon

I’d narrowly tip the Cats, and as a Lions fan I’d have a slight preference to play Collingwood in the preliminary final.

Collingwood are coming off the back of a high scoring final, but often they’ve found it tough to score. They probably can’t rely on three in a quarter from Cox, 50m missiles from Mihocek’s big toe, or 5 goal hauls from De Goey (like in their earlier matchup against the Cats) to win most games.

I think Geelong-Collingwood and the following prelim will be tough, contested games. They might be decided by a quick burst from either team.

2020 AFL semi-finals preview

I am once again in favour of the pre-finals bye, after three excellent finals.

Power surge into prelims with win over Geelong

Spot on, PD.

What hoodoo? Lions crack Richmond spell, progress to the prelims

I should clarify that I like Hardwick a lot and I think it was just because his blood was up at half time that he made the comments.

Tigers want Gold Coast final

I think the Lynch point is worth focusing on. It would have been a different game had he played – much harder for the Lions to hold out when Richmond were on top, much harder for Andrews to influence the aerial contests.

But that said I thought the final margin flattered the Tigers a bit.

What hoodoo? Lions crack Richmond spell, progress to the prelims

I just finished watching the replay. I don’t agree at all with Hardwick that the umpires didn’t let the players play.
We’ve become too tolerant of coaches whining about umpiring. Sometimes the umpires have a great game but will still cop a whack from a disgruntled coach.

Tigers want Gold Coast final

Great win for Port. They showed exactly the kind of resilience and intensity they needed to.

That said I’m a little surprised at the enthusiastic reviews for the game. I thought both teams were reluctant to take risks with the footy, and generally didn’t execute very well under pressure. They’ve been much better in other games this season; Port’s performance against Collingwood looked far more impressive.

I’ve always been a fan of the pre-finals bye, but this game wasn’t a great advertisement for it. Maybe the negatives outweigh the positives in a shorter season, with shorter games.

Power surge into prelims with win over Geelong

In hindsight, they were never going to win that game last year. Richmond were just a level above them. But I didn’t realise that until later.

I honestly don’t know if Brisbane have bridged the gap. This really is a moment of truth.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Finals Week 1

I think Marnie’s sums up the Richmond-Brisbane game well. You just have to back the Tigers based on exposed form.

But the hopeful, wide-eyed Lions fan inside me can’t help but get excited about the game. This team has done everything except beat Richmond and win a final. It’s an opportunity for another first.

Truthfully, Brisbane’s ladder position was heavily influenced by not having to play many genuine away games. But then, Richmond’s record against top teams was heavily influenced by usually getting a longer break.

I don’t think the Lions are a top two team. But at the same time I don’t think the gap between the Tigers and the rest of the league is as large as it appears to some. So I give Brisbane a red hot chance at home, with a fully fit squad. Just not enough to tip them head-to-head.

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Finals Week 1

Controversial putting Port in fifth.

Personally, I have no idea. But I suspect Brisbane might be in for a shock next year having not had to do much travel in 2020.

They might be better in 2022 than 2021.

Which 2020 finalists will not be back in 2021?

Interesting discussion about Ben Brown’s value in the comments today.

Thanks everyone.

Trading Ben Brown could make or break Rhyce Shaw's coaching career

Merrett is less of a winger than Petracca and Bontempelli.

Zach who?

That sounds disturbingly like a cult.
