The Victoria Derby will be run and won at Flemington, with $2 million on offer to the best three-year-old’s in the land. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:50pm (AEDT).

At a gruelling 2500 metres with set weights in place, the Victoria Derby is always a stern test for the young horses that tackle the famous Flemington track.

Despite little historical luck for favourites in this race, the collective wisdom of the racing fraternity is that Thinkin’ Big might make easy pickings of this field. With a recent win in the Caulfield Classic where he triumphed over the best three year-old’s in Victoria, his form is without question and a dominating display would not be a shock.

Aramayo reeks of running out the distance well and after a polished performance in the Spring Champion Stakes, might be the biggest danger to the top weight.

Despite a poor draw Savoie has real talent and with any luck, could certainly finish in the top three or four and Extra Brut looms as something similar, requiring a few things to go right on the day if Darren Weir hopes to claim the trophy.

Stars of Carrum claimed victory in the Vase at Mooney Valley last weekend and normally, that would suggest a promising run in the Derby. However, the nature of the track on which the win occurred has quite a few punters concerned about its chances.

Wider in the market, Mickey Blue Eyes, Chapada and Farooq will be in the race at some point. The question around all three will be whether they have the talent and staying potential to match it with the favourites. The odds for all three will be considerable and with favourites rarely greeting the judge in this famous race, they may be worth a look closer to start time.

Prediction
In what will be something of a minor upset, Aramayo will get the cash; outstaying the top weight and taking the lead somewhere near the famous tower that sits aside the Flemington straight.
