The barrier draw for the 2019 Melbourne Cup takes place live from Flemington. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5:30pm (AEDT).
After a furious day of racing at Flemington, the field for Australia’s greatest horse race has finally been settled and the connections, trainers and jockeys now wait patiently for the all-important barrier draw, which can make or break the chances of a cup hopeful.
In recent times, it has been barriers 10 and 11 that have brought the most success, with seven winners spanning the last 35 years.
However, barriers can mean little if the pace is lacking and horses are allowed to shuffle around and find a position that suits their regular running pattern.
In saying that, getting caught three deep from a wide barrier can be fatal, as can being caught deep in the field and having to circle 10-15 horses as the field turns into the famous Flemington home straight.
It will be an interesting draw and one that will play at least some role in determining how the 2019 Melbourne Cup plays out on Tuesday afternoon.
