One of Australia’s most prestigious races will be run and won at Flemington this afternoon, as the 2022 Melbourne Cup takes place at the famous track. Join The Roar for live race updates and commentary from 3pm (AEDT).

After the stresses of COVID-19, the Melbourne Cup will once again be run in front of massive crowds at Flemington, with the local flavour also adding to Australian interest.

With the rules tweaked in terms of access for the international raiders and the demands of taking a horse abroad to compete now a little off-putting for many overseas trainers, the race takes on a new look, with more of a domestic feel.

Deauville Legend is a firm favourite with the bookies, Gold Trip is a horse not to be dismissed, and the Payne-trained Montefilia looks a strong hope from barrier 11. Without a Fight is a strong Irish chance, Hoo Ya Mal is a serious hope for the Waterhouse/Bott stable and Grahame Begg will be hoping that Lunar Flare will bring home the chocolates for his Cranbourne stable.

The Freedman-trained Realm of Flowers may be light on in the weights, yet many feel the six-year-old could be the one to stun over the 3200 metres; and a host of horses at generous odds will also be vying for a portion of the total $14 million purse up for grabs in Australia’s most famous race.

Duais, Knights of Order, Stockman and previous winner Vow and Declare are all more than backable, with the form as tough to line up for this edition of the Cup as any other previously.

Prediction

Each and every morning I wake up with the words Gold and Trip ringing in my ears and I’ve had a feeling about this horse for some time. Deauville Legend will of course run well and Realm of Flowers could be storming home late with no weight on its back.

Should Lunar Flare overcome her minor scare and be shod tomorrow without incident, I think a bold run could be on the cards. Certainly some value in my top four.

1/ Gold Trip
2/ Deauville Legend
3/Realm of Flowers
4/ Lunar Flare
