The Victoria Derby will be run and won at Flemington Racecourse with a cool A$2 million on offer. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 3:45pm (AEDT).

Run over 2500 metres for three-year-olds at set weights, the Derby is one of the most famous and anticipated races on the Australian racing calendar.

Extra Brut took the spoils in 2018 and the general consensus appears to be that there are three clear chances amongst the 15 runners in the 2019 edition.

Shadow Hero looks the most likely after a stunning run in the Spring Champion Stakes. He is almost a lock for a top four finish.

Soul Patch has made claims on being able to handle the extended distance, especially after his solid recent showing at Mooney Valley.

Thought of That has been the talk of the week after the interesting decision by the owners to put Mark Zahra aboard, at odds equally as short as the two previously mentioned, he will be running on and also looks a likely top-four finisher.

Translator is not without a hope of running a place and with Hugh Bowman aboard, Relucent’s connections will be dreaming of a similar result.

Perhaps the best of the rest are Warning and Southern Moon, two horses suggesting they are capable of running out the distance.

Should any of the top three falter in positioning throughout the race or suffer from a jockey’s error of judgement at precisely the wrong moment, the race could be turned on its head.

However, the top three look to be the class of the race and all things being equal, should complete the trifecta.

Prediction
While the top three stand out, getting them in order is a completely different challenge. Personally, I feel Shadow Hero will win easily. Thought of That scares me the most and Soul Patch will be lurking not too far behind.
