1999 was a great World Cup for so many reasons including the plethora of dramatic games rugby lovers were treated to.
We all remember Stephen Larkham’s drop goal against South Africa, but one that often gets overlooked, which was just as amazing, was Tonga fullback Sateki Tuipulotu landing one against Italy in Group B to win the match with the final kick.
Aside from Italy’s ill discipline, conceding countless penalties, the game was a classic see-sawing contest.
Italy held a 22-18 lead up until the 78th minute when Isileli Fatani scored for Tonga. It gave the Polynesian nation a three-point lead but in the blink of an eye the Azzuri had a penalty and Diego Dominguez levelled the scores.
Most minnows would at that point accept a draw, but not Tonga. With every ounce of energy the players pushed as hard as they could and the ball was passed back from the ruck to Tuipulotu, who slotted it from around 40 metres for Tonga to rejoice with the 28-25 win.
Unfortunately for Tonga, the side was immediately brought back to Earth, crunched by England to the tune of 91 points, but thanks to Tuipulotu’s boot the side did still manage to stay ahead of Italy and take third place in the pool behind England and New Zealand.
