David Campese made the game look easy at times, with his 10 tries at Rugby World Cups for the Wallabies as well as his brilliant assists making him one of the great wingers.
The 1991 World Cup was the lowest-scoring in history, with an average of just 2.31 tries scored per game. Despite this, Campese managed six tries in the tournament and saved his best for the crucial games.
In the quarter-final against Ireland he went close to claiming a hat-trick in the Wallabies’ one-point win, while in the semi-final against New Zealand he scored one and set up Tim Horan with a miraculous pass.
Campo’s goose-step bamboozled opponents and while he had his flaws in defence he more than made up for it in his willingness to attack the game at every opportunity.
After the Wallabies won the 1991 World Cup final over England, Campese was fittingly named the World Player of the Year in 1992.
Campese reached the 100-Test milestone before retiring in 1996 with 64 tries to his name. He remains Australia’s greatest try-scorer, 24 ahead of second-placed Chris Latham.
