Yesterday we started The Roar’s Rugby World Cup countdown with the goal-kicking and point-scoring efforts of Grant Fox in 1987. Today it’s the overall win by New Zealand at the inaugural tournament.
Whenever any sporting team plays at home in a big tournament there’s champion expectations, especially when you have a record as imposing as the All Blacks.
With Fiji, Argentina, and Italy in their pool the All Blacks coasted to the knockout stages, scoring 190 points in three games.
Further comfortable wins against Scotland and Wales ensured they would take on France in the final, Les Bleus having knocked Australia out of the Cup with a six-point win.
In front of 48,000 fans at Eden Park, New Zealand completed the perfect World Cup. Fox landed a drop goal after 14 minutes and a try to Michael Jones settled the nerves of the players and the fans. France was never in the contest and the All Blacks claimed the win 29-9.
Few would have predicted that the New Zealand team would have to wait 24 years before they again tasted success – in their own backyard, against the same country.
