It was party time for the All Blacks against Japan in 1995 and Marc Ellis made the most of it with a record six tries in New Zealand’s 145-17 demolition job.
Ellis secured his hat-trick after just half an hour as the All Blacks scored at two points per minute for the first 40. Remarkably, Ellis could have had more than six tries on the day but passed the ball in open space on more than one occasion when he could have been selfish and strolled in.
Even with Ellis’ six tries, New Zealand shared it around with Jeff Wilson and Eric Rush both scoring hat-tricks.
Fly-half and goalkicker Simon Culhane made his debut in the game and scored a record 45 points.
While Japan’s defence was torn apart, they did achieve some success in attack with two impressive tries to Hiroyuki Kajihara in the second half.
Ellis changed codes at the end of 1995, and played 36 matches for the Auckland Warriors. He was also selected for New Zealand in rugby league playing five internationals.
Ellis returned to rugby in 1998, and ended his career in the Super 12 with stints at the Blues and Highlanders.
