France took on the All Blacks at their own game in the 1999 semi-final and it paid off with one of the all-time great rugby matches.
You know a game’s good when Jonah Lomu can score two tremendous tries and be overshadowed. He was overtaken that day by Christophe Lamaison, the France fly-half scored 28 points including a try, two drop goals and three penalties.
The All Blacks looked like they were on the way to victory when Lomu scored early in the second half to make it 24-10. No one could have predicted the flurry of points that was to follow, however. It started with two drop goals in as many minutes from Lamaison. He followed it up with two penalties in a row to make it 24-22 in the blink of an eye.
Back-to-back tries to Christophe Dominici and Richard Dourthe, both converted by Lamaison, meant France had scored 26 points in just 14 blistering minutes.
Despite plenty of time remaining in the match, there was no revival form the shell-shocked All Blacks. France went on to record a famous win 43-31.
As is so often the case after a classic encounter, the French couldn’t replicate the performance against the Wallabies in the final.
