Pre-race favourite Rohan Dennis has been blown away by Russian Anton Vorobyev in the men’s under 23s time trial at the world road cycling titles in the Netherlands.

Dennis, who captured an Olympic silver medal last month as part of Australia’s pursuit team, finished 44 seconds off the pace over the 36km course from Landgraaf to Valkenburg.

Fellow South Australian Damien Howson rounded out the podium a further seven seconds back with Vorobyev clocking 44 minutes and nine seconds in the rolling hills.

“To be honest, I’m disappointed with second,” Dennis said.

“It’s a great result still but obviously you always aim for the top podium spot. But at the same time it’s second at the worlds. I’ve come away with a medal so I can’t be too unhappy.”

Dennis said the Russian had been too strong over the testing climbs at the back end of the course.

“From what I was told in my earpiece it was fairly close until the (final) two climbs,” he said.

“Then he just took off, he had the legs on the day and really won it on the two climbs especially.”

It was the fifth year in a row that Australia has had a representative on the podium in the event.

Earlier on Monday, Victorian Alex Morgan missed out on a medal in the junior time trial by a just 0.8 of a second.

Shara Gillow will compete for Australia in the 24.1km women’s time trial on Tuesday.
