After yesterday’s first foray into the high mountains of this year’s Giro – a day which saw a major shake-up of the General Classification – we head back to the medium mountains today for the 184km Stage 11 from Tarvisio to Vajont.

We will again join the race from 11:00pm AEST on a day that should bring considerable action from the opportunist teams.

Stage 11 will start with a gradual descent over the first 60km, followed by the very long but gradual Category 2 climb of the Sella Ciampigotto (31.6km at 4%).

Two intermediate sprint points come in quick succession after its descent, and will reward those who crest the climb in the lead group.

From here, there’s only the Category 2 climb to the finish in Vajonte, 7km long but with a similarly mild gradient to the first climb of the day. Expect a puncheur to triumph here.

Look out for:

1) A successful breakaway – Following a tense and pivotal tenth stage for the General Classification riders, expect their teams to be more willing to let a breakaway form early and make significant gains before the start of the Sella Ciampigotto.

Look for Orica-GreenEdge to get in on the action after a quiet Stage 11, with Ryder Hesjedal’s dreams of a Maglia Rosa defense dashed, expect Garmin-Sharp to do much the same.

2) Another opportunist red jersey hopeful – Elia Viviani made the most of the easy-to-reach intermediate sprint of Stage 10 yesterday, getting himself in the breakaway and taking important points against Cadel Evans and Mark Cavendish in the Points Classification.

Today, any red jersey hopeful who crests the Category 2 climb of the Sella Ciampigotto with a breakaway will be rewarded by not one but two intermediate sprints in quick succession.

The carrot is there to chase.

Live updates will kick off at 11:00pm AEST.
