Stage 11 was always going to be one for the breakaway riders, but don’t expect the same today as the sprinters’ teams look to deliver their men to the line on a short and relatively flat Stage 12 from Longarone to Treviso. Live updates from the Giro d’Italia will start at 11.00pm AEST.

After a long week of hills and time trials, the gallopers of the Giro will be looking to make the most of the next two relatively flat days of racing.

Indeed, those with ambitions of wearing the Maglia Rossa into Brescia in ten days will need to capitalize as they quickly run out of flat stages and chase Cadel Evans’ lead in the classification.

Today’s 134km into Treviso are largely downhill, but for two manageable but potentially dangerous categorized climbs:

The first climb, the Muro di Ca del Poggio, sits around 75km from the stage finish. It’s short at only 1km, but has a 12.2 percent average gradient and a pitch of 20 percent near its base.

30km of flat road separates it from the Montello – Santa Maria Della Vittoria, which averages 5.8 percent over 3.6km, and also features a steep ramp of 14 percent early in its slopes.

From there, it’s 40km of flat and downhill riding to the finish in Treviso.

Look out for:

1) Mark Cavendish under pressure – Going on his form from the early stages of the race, if Cavendish is still in contact at the top of the Montello – S.M.D. Vittoria, then he will be hard to beat.

Expect the other sprinters’ teams, especially Viviani’s Cannondale and Goss’ Orica-GreenEdge, to put him to the test on the two punchy climbs.
If they do manage to gap him, don’t expect them to wait around over the final 40km – it’s going to be a quick finish.

2) Elia Viviani chasing points – While Cavendish has been resting in recent days, Viviani has been in breakaways and successfully looking to score in the intermediate sprints.

With today’s first intermediate sprint only 11km in, will he face resistance?

3) Pinarello on the podium – A Pinarello win in Treviso, the home of the brand, would be poetic, but unlikely since Cav’s move from Sky and with his likely rivals riding Cannondale and Specialized.
