In a 16th stage punctuated by a constant stream of late attacks, it was Benat Intxausti who eventually stood victorious yesterday, winning a sprint finish in Ivrea. Join us from 11.00pm AEST when we pick up the action live from the 2013 Giro d’Italia.

Today presents another opportunity for late action in the 203km 17th stage from Caravaggio to Vicenza.

Stage 17 is, on the surface at least, a sprinters’ stage. With the exception of one fourth-category climb, it is otherwise pancake flat, and looks made for the big boys.

Unfortunately for the sprinters, though, that one climb rises 360m in approximately 5km, with pitches of 12 percent, and summits only 16km from the finish line in Vicenza.

The sprint teams will certainly have no issues reaching the foot of the climb with the peloton, but what happens from there will be somewhat beyond their control, and instead up to the climbers.

With tomorrow’s Individual Time Trial looming and the Giro’s frightful queen stage just two restless nights away, the climbers may opt for a ceasefire today, letting the sprinters or breakaway battle it out for the victory.

If, on the other hand, they call ‘game on’, then it will quickly be game over for the sprinters as yesterday’s climb – similar to today’s in size and location – proved just how quickly the big contenders of this year’s race can tear apart a peloton.

Look for more big names in the day’s breakaway, as teams get more and more desperate to take home a prize in this final week.

After today, there will only be two more opportunities to escape, and I don’t envy anybody who chooses the breakaway on either of those two stages!
