Stage 2 of the 2013 Criterium du Dauphine is a 191 kilometre ride from Chatel to Oyonnax, which may have been sold to some as a ‘sprint’ stage for the Dauphine, but in reality, it’s more like a medium mountains stage.
After yesterday’s successful breakaway win by David Veilleux of Europcar, it may be unlikely a break will survive today, however, prior to yesterday’s stage, I had this as a stage for a breakway.
The other likely scenario, could be an opportunity for the race’s GC contenders to attempt to split the peloton and do some real damage.
There are five categorised climbs during the stage and plenty of descending for those of us who like to watch mad men careen down a mountain, through eyes covered with fingers, because that will prevent any crashes.
The race will leave the ski resorts and will pass over roads that are a little more accustomed to farm machinery than BMWs and tourist buses. This should make for some interesting riding or interesting carnage. The Dauphine meets Paris-Roubaix because that’s just what the pro-peloton want to be doing just out of the Tour.
The final kilometres into Oyannax are going to be fast and furious, hence, some suggestion that this could be a day for the sprinters.
Riders will descend down into Oyonnax and once through some corners that may test the bravery of the leaders, it will be a flat stampede to the end.
