Welcome to the eighth and final stage of the 2013 Criterium du Dauphine. Todays 155km of racing will see the peloton enjoying the mountain scenery once again as the stage moves from Sisteron to Risoul. We’ll have live updates from 9.00pm AEST.
Risoul will also feature in the 2014 Tour de France, so today’s stage could be a nice opportunity for everyone to get acquainted with it.
Yesterday’s stage saw Spaniard Sammy Sanchez of Euskaltel, outfox Jacob Fuglsang of Astana to take the win.
Sanchez was doing his best Tommy Voeckler impersonation, as sped past his Danish companion in the last two hundred metres.
So, what will happen today? Well, barring a nuclear holocaust, a swarm of locusts of apocalyptic proportions or just plain old falling off his bike, Sky’s Chris Froome will win the 2013 Criterium du Dauphine.
Alberto Contador may be praying for these things to occur to the yellow jersey wearer, because that would be about the only way he’ll win this event.
To be a bit more realistic, ‘Bertie’ may go for the stage win himself or once again play the exemplary team mate to Michael Rogers who sits in third.
It has to be said, Contador grew immensely in my mind after looking after Rogers in yesterday’s stage.
Aussie Rohan Dennis may have dropped to ninth place after yesterday’s stage, but he has ridden an amazing race and still leads the white jersey category.
He has a 1’01” lead over OPQS Michal Kwiatkowski of Poland. Hopefully he can hang on to this lead by the end of the day.
The course itself, is nice and mountainous with a category three climb, the Cote de la Breole, 942m, at 52.5 km then two category one climbs to finish the day.
The Col de Vars at 2100m appears at the 119km mark and after some descending, the peloton will climb the category one Montee de Risol which is 1800m for a summit finish.
