The new season has begun. Spring is almost around the corner as the big name horses look to begin their preparations throughout August.

A big happy birthday to all the colts, geldings, fillies and mares out there. Another year older and another year wiser.

Congratulations to Chris Waller and Nash Rawiller in taking out the trainer and jockey premierships respectively in New South Wales, and the same goes for Peter Moody and Glen Boss in taking out the Victorian metro Premierships for season 2012/13.

A special mention has to go to Nash Rawiller who has been super impressive over the past couple of months, finishing with a strike rate of 20.9% for the season. He even got the lacklustre Diamond Jim over the line on Wednesday, a horse who has not looked close to winning of late.

Now to this weekend’s racing.

We have a couple of smart 3-year-olds racing this weekend with the unbeaten pair of Champagne Cath and Respected resuming at Rosehill Gardens, while Clevadude, Metastasio and Cauthen will resume at Mooney Valley.

It will be interesting to see how the talented 3-year-old New Zealand colt Cauthen fairs against the Australian 3-year-olds after winning by a staggering 8.5 lengths on debut. James McDonald must have a high opinion of this horse as he is flying down from Sydney solely for this ride.

The first black type race of the new season will be the listed Winter Challenge over 1500m at Rosehill Gardens, and has produced a field of 10 runners.

Under the Sun headlines the betting after his last start win followed by Bayrir, Less is More, Coup Aye Tee and Bold Glance all under double figure odds.

All eyes will be on the imported Chris Waller-trained Bayrir. He is yet to be super impressive in his two recent trials at Rosehill, but has excellent international Group 1 form lines behind the likes of Red Cadeux, Dunaden and Dandino. The 1500m trip first up may be a bit too sharp for him; but look out for him when he starts racing over further distances.

The favourite Under the Sun dictated things from the front last start in a 3.5 length victory in the Winter Stakes over 1400m. He will probably dictate things again here, but the extra 3kgs he’ll be carrying will make it much tougher.

From barrier 3, Coup Aye Tee won’t get as far back as he did last time and the 3kg weight advantage on Under the Sun is definitely going to assist. With no rain predicted over the next few days, the track should improve to a Good 3.

Coup Aye Tee seems favourite to take out the first black type race of the season from Under the Sun and the classy imported galloper Bayrir.

Happy New ‘Racing’ Year!
