On Thursday night, members of the 2013 Melbourne Mustangs including Jamie Bourke, Pat O’Kane and Brendan McDowell, the club’s top three offensive players, took part in one of the first major open training sessions of 2014.

Along with the session there was an open invite for anyone wanting to try out for the team. The turnout was massive and lots of potential players were on hand to showcase their skills.

Judging by what was going on the talent pool is far and wide.

Both the old Mustangs and potential ones looked sharp and ready to impress. Attitude was up energy was good and the skills looked better than last year.

These are great signs for the future and not only for the Mustangs; but also for the future of the sport in Australia.

There will be some tough decisions coming up for the Mustangs organisation especially those in the hockey department. It’ll be a period of sussing out the balance of the team and how they can improve in this forthcoming season.

While it would be easy for them to keep on going with what made them successful last year, they like everyone else need to evolve with the game and what better way then to add to their team.

With a potent attacking force and a tough set of defenders that can only get better this group are sure to shine once again in the season.

The key side of the offence is for the Mustangs to find a few more additional players to complement their top three.

The added support from second and even third tier players will make them a much more threatening force.

It was an area at times the team struggled a little bit with in games, which led to them having in-difference performances week-by-week.

This is even evident in the NHL, while the big names are always going to score points they need support from those around them.

For the Mustangs on the back end, a key cog would be for them to improve in the little areas, especially their communication which had lead to some poor play in their own end.

The likelihood of the defence not changing much, bar a few additions, should see them become a forceful unit in a matter of time.

Certainly there is much to look forward to for the Mustangs and their fans in the coming few weeks.

It’ll be another bumper year for them and hopefully that maiden playoff run comes to them soon.

Wishing all the players the best of luck in making the top squad and looking forward to seeing the returning faces.
