Victory in the 2015 Caulfield Cup was claimed by the pre-race favourite, Mongolian Khan, ridden by Opie Bosson and trained by Murray Baker.
Mongolian Khan entered the race at $5 in the betting and made good on its promise with a dash from the pack in the latter stages of the race giving it the win. It was a calculated tactic.
“The plan was to make it a stayer’s race in the straight. We know he can run 2400m and it worked out,” Baker said.
“He’s a very good stayer. I think at 2000m in weight-for-age he isn’t sharp enough to manoeuvre out, but we knew he would stay today at 2400m.”
When the race began it was Set Square who came to the front of the pack and led the field for the majority of the run around the Caulfield racecourse.
At the 800m mark Bosson made his move and Mongolian Khan took an exciting dash from the side of the pack, pulling into the lead near the 500m mark.
Set Square faded back into the pack, while Mongolian Khan retained the lead for the remainder of the race, ultimately the victor over Trip to Paris (second) and Our Ivanhowe (third).
Set Square ultimately finished sixteenth despite a promising start, but it was Royal Descent, ridden by Glen Boss and trained by Chris Waller, who finished in last place.
After entering the race at $16 in the betting, Royal Descent finished more than 29 lengths behind the winner, and 15 lengths behind the seventeenth placed Magicool.
Magnapal also faded as the race wore on despite spending most of the early portion of the race trailing only Set Square in the field, ultimately finishing fourteenth.
Protectionist, last year’s Melbourne Cup winner, came in fifteenth.
