Matthew Mitcham’s incredible dive at the 2008 Beijing Olympics wasn’t exactly well-received in the arena. After all, he had just snatched away gold from the host nation. But in Australia, it sent the country into a frenzy.
Australia might be one of the strongest swimming nations, but that success hasn’t translated across to one of the other Olympic pools. Between 1928 and 2004, no Australian man had won a diving gold.

By the time the men’s 10-metre platform event rolled around in 2008, that streak didn’t look like ending anytime soon. China’s Zhou Luxin was looking likely to continue the home nation’s diving dominance at the Games; they had won every gold medal in the sport so far, and a clean sweep was beckoning.
Most people agreed that, even if Zhou missed out on the gold, it wouldn’t be because of Mitcham, who had performed miserably in the 3m springboard and missed out on the final in that event altogether.
And while he kept Zhou honest with some fine dives from the platform, Mitcham never really looked likely to claim the gold. Even when Zhou botched the entrance on his final dive of the event, he still led the Aussie by 107.3 points.
Technically, the door was still ajar, but it was only by the smallest of cracks.
That crack, however, proved to be more than enough for Mitcham, who produced a nigh-on flawless dive – a back two and a half somersault with two and a half twists – to record the highest score for a single dive in Olympic history: 112.10.
It gave him a winning margin of 4.8 points. Not much, but enough to give him a precious Olympic gold medal.
