It was hard to believe, but we reached the final day of league play in the Gfinity Elite Series for Season 1, 2018 today. The Rocket League and Street Fighter V competitions handed out their finals tickets after an intense five weeks of competition.
The Rocket League action started with a winner-takes-all clash between Sydney Roar and Melbourne Avant, with Avant finding form we didn’t know they had in a 3-0 win.
Perth Ground Zero were looking for a finals tune-up against the lowly Brisbane Deceptors and that’s just what they got, triumphing easily 3-0 in an ominous sign for the rest of the competition.
The Sydney Chiefs and Melbourne Order then faced off in a potential grand final preview, and it was the hometown side who got the job done 3-2 in one of the better matches of the season.
The day really got weird, however, when Street Fighter took the stage.
The undefeated Melbourne Avant found themselves knocked off by the winless Sydney Roar, before Perth – looking for another finals tune-up – found themselves humbled by Brisbane.
The match of the round was once again the Chiefs-Order bout at the end of the day and, again, the home team delivered with a 4-2 triumph.
It was a rough day for tipster Stirling Coates’, with his tips for week 5 torn to shreds. He tipped a split between Avant and the Roar – but got it the wrong way around, while Perth’s shock Street Fighter loss to Brisbane and Order’s defeat in the same game saw our resident Gfinity expert finish a poor two out of six on the day.
It proved to be a thrilling final day of regular season action, as we gear up for the finals next week.
