Never say never Danny – as they say in golf, your next shot could your best ever.
Who knows when the next gem of a game will happen? – we have to keep watching to find out!
Has modern rugby union lost its entertainment value?
Agree – I was relieved that after a dodgy opening minute or two, I really enjoyed the spectacle.
The first All Black try off an early scrum with a set move using Grizz Wyllie was a thing of beauty!
Happy New Year!

And Happy New Year to you!
Gotta say that the scrums were the highlight for me…. they just materialised each time… so simple and fluid compared to today – a completely different animal.
Cheers!

Stats from the article mentioned above:
“Influenced by the research findings, South Africa trialled the revised scrum law from 2012 (prior to the global roll-out). In the four years prior to the law change in South Africa (2008-2011), 14 catastrophic scrum-related spinal injuries occurred, a rate of 3.5 per year. In the eight years after the laws revision (2012-2019), five such injuries have occurred in the scrum in South Africa, corresponding to a rate of 0.6 per year.
Following the change in the law scrum-related injuries of all types in New Zealand that led to claims from a leading national insurer fell from 52 per 100,000 prior to the law change, to 24 per 100,000 in 2014.
And in professional rugby in England there has been a significant 40% reduction in scrum-related injuries that lead to players missing training or playing time before and after the law change.”

I see Keith passed away a while back… spent his latter years in Australia… was sort of tragic how things panned out.
Has modern rugby union lost its entertainment value?
Totally agree Gary – no grass roots – no future.
Especially in regional areas – no support/investment leads to no interest.
Free to air coverage is also basically nil…
And then to top it off, the PPV product is beset with the issues mentioned in the comments…
We dinosaurs on the ROAR keep the flame flickering though!
Cheers

“They barely strike on their own feed now.” – but they do get to throw into the lineouts Frank – seems like a fair trade?
Now the wingers have even less to do…
Has modern rugby union lost its entertainment value?
Wales won all their four matches to win the 5 Nations championship in 1971. They won the Triple Crown for the second time in three seasons and completed the Grand Slam for the first time since 1952.
The NH tour was the following year (72) – the AB’s had lost to SA (in SA) 3-1 in 1970.
I reckon Wales – South Africa final – home team winning!
Has modern rugby union lost its entertainment value?
Maybe we should go back to the windmill throw in – Bryan Williams style – the AB’s scored a try off one of his throws! 😁 👍 🏉
Has modern rugby union lost its entertainment value?
I reckon the Welsh might have had a good crack at it… it would have been a small comp in 1971…. probably no pools ????
Has modern rugby union lost its entertainment value?
And we got to enjoy a 58% flow of rugby in the first half when they players had an intent to play and the ref let them – and twas a thing of beauty!!!
(though one could question the quality of the defenses I suppose 😁 😊 )

“Boring”…..
by the props at scrum time?

Excellent opinion piece. Thanks.
I wonder if DR is actually devastated at being relieved of command given all the BS that RA seems so adept at dishing out.
I can’t help but wonder how things might have been different for DR had Flt Lt Bernard “Biggles” Foley not a) been brought back at all and b) single handedly lost the 1st Bledisloe test.
Certainly sets up an entertaining year ahead – and as you so wisely surmised – “Which really top coach (meaning, not one fired for poor performance; perhaps a Razor or ROG) would take the job under this crew?”
Happy New Year team!
OPINION: Four reasons Eddie's long-term deal is a bad idea for Australian rugby - and two why it makes perfect sense
