Eels hit new low as Bulldogs run riot
Hey Blazza, Dogs fan here so you certainly have my sympathy. Big difference was the lengthof the rorting that went on, and the amount of extra income generated from it (and inflation etc). The Dogs were nailed for that particular year, and I believe the year before to a lesser extent and hadn’t won premierships and gotten the monetary rewards from that (bout 100k for premiers and minor premiers each, as well as the merchandise sales, etc).
Docking points was the only real option along with the fines. As with the docked points it was impossible for us to get anything less than last I assume they didn’t care what we got, whereas the Storm could have (lets be honest as well, would have) charged toward a premiership leaving everyone wringing their hands.
Strip clubs of premiership points for breaching salary cap
They are incredibly complex legal documents (you generally need some form of contract law degree to negotiate them) and are ofter thick as a textbook for the better players (a friend of mine works at a sports management agency).
There is no way for a club to manage the absurd amount of clauses involved.
Strip clubs of premiership points for breaching salary cap
The central issue with these salary cap issues is they are not down to systematic attempts to rort the cap, but generally have to do with the calling up of reserve graders when injuries hit.
Players are not payed x amount of dollars per season, they have base salaries, plus extras. One central issue is with reserve graders, these extras are how many first grade appearances they make. If a player goes down injured they must be replaced.
For example, Thurstons season is ruled out for twelve weeks, so the Cows call up Bill Bloggs to fill in for those twelve weeks as he is the best man for the job. Bill has a contract clause where he gets an extra 40k for playing 10 first grade games inthe hopes to make him push harder.
What do they do? Play him for 9 games and then bring out some 18 year old who is no good yet?
You generally find clubs that get hit with these breaches had an injury crisis, or a host of players who needed to be dropped, etc.
While I understand where you’re coming from, you should notice all the teams hit for these minor breaches (as in previous years) were usually a combination of awful and struck by injury, and to dock them points would simply lead to better players playing reserve grade than the ones in first grade when no real rorting has occurred.

Great article. One thing I always liked about Clarkey is he is willing to risk a loss to grab a win. Punter for mine was too willing to settle for stumps on day five, and too often put the opposing team in a position where they couldn’t win before he went on to try and beat them.
The fact that he was dropped and played on with no whinging is incredibly commendable.
Clarke's first year of captaincy better than expected
Will definitely has a point, but it did show that they are capable of pulling it out of the fire to some extent.
The Eels seem to thrive on anarchy, yet are placed in a system that doesn’t allow it.
I do wonder what they would play like if the build up to game day was practicing defence with orders of toss it around and see what comes up.
BROWNIE: Without the pressure, Eels show they can play
If the Dogs don’t towel Parra up I’ll be very disappointed.
Dogs need to start winning again, says Hasler
Not only were two of the losses against last years premiers and minor premiers (by a combined total of 8 points) but last year they were worse.
He was the ONLY thing for huge patches that was putting points on the board for Canterbury, and this season has started swinging out wide a lot more and added his passing game in.
By your logic Thurston, Greg Inglis, Dave Taylor, etc, should have had big red marks next to their names for various stages saying “Not fit for rep football”.
Maroons must select Barba on the bench
Cashmere did well last weekend from what I saw in the second half, might earn himself another year, but you’d think that coal mining would be more lucrative than whatever the Tigers would throw at him.
A little Ray of sunshine for the Tigers
Wentworthville are a powerhouse. They have a halfback on 550k a year!
Another international rugby league tragedy
Nobody ever seems to mention the fact that the majority of the money from these deals comes from Fox, which the NRL has dominated the rating for for years, yet never seem to get the same money as a sport that has always rated lower on that medium.
Why the NRL deserves to get its billion
He played all his junior, Under 20s and for the Bulls in the halves, and when he was bench utility he was often Centre or Hooker.
About 10 months ago people were saying fullback was the only spot he couldn’t play in the backline.
His defence wasn’t bad, he just aint big. Queenslands pack could hide him pretty easily imo.

Gareth Barry was man of the match? That must have been the worst game ever played.

Fletcher would have come in handy in this game you’d have to think. Luckily Man U have an expert in defence in Scholes whose perfect tackling technique has only improved with age.

I hope these fan forums start becoming a regular fixture for all the teams.
FFA seems to be getting the band back together
I think people need to get some perspective about Penriths current situation. Penrith had a massive amount of backended contracts which meant their list was ridiculously unsustainable (Purtell for example was meant to be on very good coin). These contracts are being wound down while Penriths juniors are being bred to move into the first team, and all their junior teams are tearing it up big time.
The club is being completely restructured from a Leagues club with a team attached, to a football team with incedental funding from a leagues club.
The entire juniors systrm is being restructured to make it more productive, but this will take time.
If Penrith do succeed in what they’re trying to do, then by 2015 they will be the new Melbourne Storm, and the team will have grown up together, making them easier to keep a hold of and they will play together better.
Eels and Panthers share the blowtorch of criticism
