The W.S.Cox Plate is Australia’s premier weight-for-age race run at Moonee Valley. Many great horses have won the Cox Plate; from Phar Lap to Kingston Town, from Northerley to Sunline.

And many great moments too ie “Kingston Town can’t win” race in 1982, or the Bonecrusher-Our Waverley Star ‘race of the century’ in 1986.

This year’s edition will feature star colt and Caulfield Guineas winner Helmet, New Zealand hotpots Jimmy Choux and Derby winner Lion Tamer, as well as consistent performer Sincero, and controversially, the Lloyd Williams-owned Efficient, coming back from a long spell of injuy.

But the question for the Moonee Valley Race Club and for Racing Victoria, is should the Cox Plate be run under lights to give the race a prime-time TV audience?

In my opinion, a definite yes.

After all, you would have the best horses racing at 2040m, in the electric atmosphere that Moonee Valley can generate in night racing – and what’s more – a prime-time TV audience would be watching throughout Australia and overseas.

It would be a massive shot in the arm for racing here in Australia. Already the Manikato Stakes, run the night before the AFL Grand Final has considerable following for the under-lights event.

So, MVRC and Racing Victoria, do the right thing and run the 2012 WS Cox Plate at night.
